Dist-upgrade to Sid

#1 Post by Lou »

I just wanted to report that i did a dist-upgrade from Sarge to Sid, and that it went without a hiccup. It told me to purge hotplug, udev took over. I installed the latest 2.6 kernel, erased the old one and xf86config-4 with debfoster, cleaned it up with deborphan (long list of crud), apt-get clean, and that was it. No problem at all with xorg as i see hapenning with Etch, installed 'apt-listbugs'. The amount of used space in my hd went down to 682 MB.

Heck, if this continues like this, i might hang around the flyboys.

I report this in case somebody is thinking about doing it.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the xorg version installed is 7.0.17

...the xorg version installed is 7.0.17
Hmm. When I do apt-cache policy xserver-xorg I get
xserver-xorg:
Installed: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Candidate: 1:7.0.22
Version table:
1:7.0.22 0
991 http://mirror.direct.ca etch/main Packages
800 http://mirror.direct.ca sid/main Packages
*** 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
From where did you get 7.0.17
:?:
I've been holding off from doing a dist-upgrade because of the recent xorg weirdness....
I'd like to stay with etch, but when I do a simulation it looks kind of, well, scary, and seems to want to install a lot of xserver stuff for graphics cards I don't have.
I'm also not sure what, if anything, it will do to my nvidia setup. I hate having to reconfigure x!

well if you do, and x refuses to start because it can't find the nvidia module anymore, sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run --uninstall and then, sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/

that should cover all bases, in case it breaks (:

For a guy used to working in Sarge, this is not important, i'll wait till they get their stuff together.

No worries, mate!

I spoke too soon, i can't shut it down automatically, i have to do it manually

Oh well, no biggie, tomorrow i'll hit google first thing in the morning.

Another thing, IceWM and Fluxbox upgraded beautifully, except Ion3, the maintainer hasn't dealt with the Debian menu.

I've been playing with Sid and my apps since this evening and everything works great. I tried to install synaptic but apt-listbugs told me 'no can do, 8 bugs', so for the first time in my life, i tried aptitude, not bad!

So far, Sid hasn't disappointed me, i thought it was gonna be bad.

Sid is NOT for newbies, you're expected to know the basics in order to fix what might go wrong or at least understand what they're talking about in the forums.

If you're a newbie, stay with Sarge, read the HOWTOs in the doc section of this site, install the debian reference and study it. And only then, make your move; otherwise, you're gonna be pestering people, because it will be over your head.

OTOH, Sid has newer apps, some buggy, you will have a very modern distro who by definition is not stable. If during the dist-upgrade there is stuff you don't understand, you ain't ready, bud. Your move. :P

I'm trying to be honest with you and not give you the rah, rah, bullshit some fanboys do.

I might go back to Sarge if something pisses me off, there is something peaceful & efficient about a distro version that always works.
