Oh, Sir, I think that depends on your definition of 'quality (pro)'.

R and RStudio (makes me a little money)

Blender (one I intend to play with more in the future)

Texlive (central to anyone writing stuff about maths and science)

SuperCollider/GEM/puredata/Ardour/Din/jackd anyone doing sound art is using this stuff as a change from logic/reaktor on the fruity machines

bash shell - Microsoft thought it worth porting!

This is a application that is in the Debian repositories:
Scribus – Open Source Desktop Publishing
It is really nice, recently I offered to start translating a "newspaper" that is in English,
and needed to start using some kind of "desktop publisher" to put the translated text,
and the images back into a document, or documents that look like the original paper,
Just last night I tried "Scribus" for the first time, and it is great.
I could start it from the command line:
just by typing

Code: Select all

scribus
It has it's own "GUI", or can be just run directly from the command line, if one takes the time to learn the various options and commands.

Yes

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 8 \n \l

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache search byzanz
byzanz - small screencast creator
Looks like a nice tool. I might try it out.

The malware for Free File Sync was attached to the Windows installer by Sourceforge. This is a known problem with Sourceforge and Windows programs--so far, they've been leaving Linux apps alone.

Well that is good to know, that it does not effect linux. It is worth while though to check things before downloading them.

I see that Freefilesync is only offering a static amd64 binary for Linux users. If anybody wants, I can add deb packages for 32 and 64-bit version 8.0 to one of my OBS repositories, built from the source code.

I would like that! I use it around our office to do a "lite" backup of our file server. But for whatever reason when I used the .deb right from the site I could never get the app to see the shared folders on the network. I'm sure I have deeper issues with Samba but having a "standard" app that I can use, and that is understandable to the less technical people in the office would be ideal.

I'm sure that one of the many rsync solutions is probably better, but I'm also trying to make sure that whoever has to run this when I'm not in the office can still get things done.

OK--it should be in the MX 15 test repo soon, but I'll also add it to an OBS repo.
