Recoll, index most of the files avilable: Word, PDF's, txt, zip, rar, Audio/Images tags etc

It uses scripts called filters for processing differents kind of formats files, it can decompress files to scan indexing, and even do OCR's.

I like rclpdf filter which allow to process images PDF files--> It uses tessarct OCR and it works great.


With Recoll installed thers nothing you can miss in a txt search, Recoll in my opinion in one of the most powerfull and usefool tool in linux.. It allow me find any file i want, by using a few words

Does anyone able to install MakeHuman 1.1 without using PPA?
MakeHuman package doesn't exist on Jessie.

It used to have 1.0.2 version .deb package for download for Debian on official site but they removed.

Now the author force us to use PPA on 1.1 from now on.

There're MakeHuman 1.1 on Testing/Sid channel though.

From what I can see, you should be able to download and install the debs for the stretch version with gdebi in Jessie 8, from packages.debian.org. It seems to be a Python 2 program, which has a much better chance of being backward-compatible than those compiled from source code into machine-language binaries.

Just to be safe, I'll also rebuild it on a Debian 8 OBS repository.

Makehuman & some other softwares that's not exit on Debian Jessie repo was the reason I shift to Testing/Sid Channel.
If I've enough softwares that I lack start to exist on Jessie. I'd shift down to Jessie fully once again.
I just do only once in this thread because I want to find a way to contact you somehow.
Because next time I might submit software list that you might interest.

I've been hoarding softwares both .exe & .deb since before using Debian based
some are .Appimages, some are portable binary which I can get away from mixing repo or PPA
But some still left are text notes of PPA which are not exist on Debian. Which this list I might submit you later.
This will be useful for both Debian & MX repositories.

You can PM me with a list if you don't already see them in the MX main or test repo. We also have an enthusiastic new packager, and things have been slow lately, so he'd welcome the opportunity.

Though I have been thinking about a pretty big project, which is to backport a newer Qt 5 to Jessie, since the current 5.3 doesn't support configuration of its appearance.

Forked it to mx-clocky, bundled it with a selection of themes, and added a theme manager that allows selecting, previewing, adding, and removing non-bundled themes, such as from the pack in the Youtube video. The preview won't work if there's no preview bitmap in the theme folder, though.

The python program also needs yad from jessie-backports for the theme-manager script. It can use cairo-clock themes, but uses much less CPU resources than that clock.

Both the m12 and mx15 packages should work on Jessie if you have yad available.

This is the version that had the plugins such as fire (Burn) and Beam Me Up (Beam) before they were removed for compiz 0.9.X. It works well on my machine, YMMV. You'll have to configure it manually; refer to the Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz

Lazarus IDE
An IDE using Lazarus/Delphi Object Pascal. The IDE has integrated GUI design and does NOT requires contorted methods to access graphical widgets within code.

LXDE Terminal and XFCE Terminal
I found using these two terminals pleasant to the eyes as fonts can be set not to cause unnecessary eye fatigue.

nano
Since a few months ago I was still using vim to edit system files. When I discovered nano I never looked back. Nano runs in terminal which means it can easily be run with root privileges without necessitating the installation of other software to allow running GUI applications as root.

GRUB2
I am a wild multibooter .

My computer has about nine or eight operating systems installed! Like GRUB1, GRUB2 proved to be easy to use once you workaround the new features that require using scripts. I installed it a very small partition that hold sonly a minimal Debian installation with root alone as a user. GRUB2 is well behaved even when I upgrade kernels belonging to the various installations.

+1 for nano. It's the only thing I ever used and does what it says on the tin - edits text files from console, easily.

I'm a rabid multibooter with GRUB2 as well, only 4 OS currently although I had 6 before changing my OS drive.

I think that some great Windows applications that can be runned propertly on linux (using wine) deserve to be known. Many of us would like to know about theses applications so that we dont need have windows installed in another boot partition or in a virtual machine.

Thanks to project wine linux community can install windows applications with sometimes extra features not easy available in open sourse apps., I think its easy to understand unless you're a hater.

Recently I've been very much enjoying a few *nix-specific apps.

-tmux, a terminal multiplexer
-newsbeuter, a terminal based RSS reader
-Gnome Maps OH WAIT NO THAT STOPPED WORKING
-Gnome boxes, a very simple and easy to use virtual machine program
-PowerTop, Power utility. This gave an extra hour of battery, and puts Linux on par with Windows for battery
-Conky, because of course
-Gnome-Shell and basic gnome applications, plus various gnome extensions
-xournal, great for taking handwritten notes via touchscreen
-nano, because I haven't spent the time to learn vim and nano is nice and simple and sufficient for my needs
-Bleachbit, for cleaning out the junk
-Onboard on screen keyboard, because it's way better and more configurable than the default gnome keyboard.

And a few applications that are available for both *nix and Windows/OSX

-Google Chrome/Chromium- still my favorite web browser
-Several Chrome apps, like mightytext, hangouts and docs
-Firefox- always good for when 'd rather google didn't track my every move
-Icedove (although I know it's called thunderbird everywhere except Debian)
