Livestreamer is pretty cool. Pipes youtube, twitch, and many more to vlc or some other media player. There's also addons for firefox and chrome that let you send an url directly to livestreamer.

Add this to your .bashrc
Then just open a terminal type yt and paste the video url and go back to doing some work while it downloads. Great for skipping all the ads and for folk with slow connections

We've chromium (or chrome), iceweasel(or firefox) and then comes Opera browser, or perhaps we can say we have Opera browser and the rest because opera browser is the most complete and fast browser all together.

opera browser uses chromium core, and offer us some interesting features that we cant find in the others browsers such as:

- Sessions--> save all the open tabs and windows as a new session.
- Page zooming--> Instead of just making the text bigger, this feature expands all page elements

I start with Jessie netinstall always then add what i need after logging in.

Desktop Environment = KDE 4.14.2 (version in jessie repo)
File Manager = Dolphin
Web Browsers = Chromium as main but also iceweasel
IRC Client = Konversation (used to use hexchat)
Music Player = Clementine
Video Players = VLC Player as main, smplayer also installed
Photo Viewer = Gwenview
Terminal = Konsole
Image Editing = GIMP
Video Editing = Do this on windows 7
File Sync = Dropbox
Backup Tools = Borg Backup and grsync

Overall there isnt a whole lot of programs that i install, just install what i need, nothing more

Good list and i'd recommend you following apps:
Music Player = Audacious + Streamtunner2 (i find clementine some slow responsive)
Photo Album Manager = Picassa 3.9 (wine)
Image Editing = GIMP and Krita, also inkscape
Transcoding Video= Avidemux, Handbrake, and ffmpeg (Winff gui)
Video Editing = kdenlive
File Sync = get away from Dropbox and get MEGA. MEGA give you 50G free, its better client and get updates more often.

Many programs are in "my" jessie too.

Worth mentioning, perhaps, are

- PCManFM,
- as mp3 player a nice, little program called DeaDBeeF - http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/ - that I found.

I'd like to use OpenOffice instead of LibreOffice, but I've not gotten around to installing OOo.

Ages ago, at work we had AIX, which as desktop environment had CDE (Common Desktop Environment).
I found that CDE is now free software - http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdesktopenv/ (now that brings back memories) - but unfortunately it needs compiling, and it seems that I will have to do some learning first

If memory serves, after considerable hair-pulling and teeth-grinding, vbrummond managed to get CDE to compile, just for lulz. It was delightful nostalgia to see that classic early GUI running atop Debian.

Edit: Confirmed; found it in the screenshot thread. Unfortunately, the image hosting site he used has since gone belly-up (just as dumpyourphoto did this past year). Ah well. It's not like it looked different or anything.

I had been using audacious before but then i switched to clementine, cant remember the reasons why though.

I only use gwenview for viewing pictures, all my pics are in dropbox, personal photos i've took are on my Google Photos.
Plus wine ewwwww... not a fan.

yeah i've seen inkscape and krita looks awesome, but i'm only doing very basic editing maybe once a month so no need for them

Yeah i use avidemux on windows, avanti (ffmpeg front-end) handbrake and few others on my windows 7 install.

I'm using Dropbox Pro, i would use google drive if it had a Linux client. If it's something i don't want people to see, it gets encrypted before going onto dropbox.
Dropbox supports win/mac/linux has always "just worked" whether i use on windows 7, Debian or my android phone, and always has given me the best speeds. Plus the "shared folders" feature comes in handy for other friends who also use dropbox.

1- Install in Windows and copy installation to linux wine (installation in linux failt during process)

It's obvious that each person has their own version of a Linux installation.

I use this trick to install "my" custom install. I don't have to waste time installing packages one by one. I can do a full install to my liking as fast as my internet connection lets me.

I create a file named "pkglist.txt" with all of my favorites listed one per line.

Set-up my sources.list file.

# apt-get update
# apt-get install $(< pkglist.txt)

Sit back and let the magic of apt-get do all the work.

The file may have to altered over time as you add new programs or packages are no longer available. Apt-get will chack for any errors in the list before it starts so once it starts it's pretty painless. Saves a lot of time!

With time I adopted the same strategy used by biological systems in which survival and necessity dictate what traits are selected for and which are selected against.
