they have the "eat your own dog food" motto, which would imply they use there own servers, if they actually wanted to get any work done they would use linux servers, thats why vista took so long. :)

They ran Freebsd on their hotmail servers for a long time after they purchased hotmail.

I believe they where aware of it also.

To an extent it seems that the 'eat your own dogfood' methodology is correct however when Microsoft wanted a new wireless network capable of handling more than 25,000 simultaneous users a day in some 60 countries what did they choose? Aruba Networks. Aruba mobility controllers run the Linux. Now isn't that interesting?

personally i'd say having a major site of yours down due to DDOS is far more embarasing than keeping that site up by hiring a company that uses your competitors software.

I have a friend who works at MS and she says they use unix for all their backbone stuff.

not sure what flavour though
