Everybody have they different reasons
my 2cents...
1) I like LTS Kernel

2) For my desktop there is nothing new. Every bug fixing or security updates are to this kernel version 3.16.
My desktop is from 2007 using SATA which boots in 8.8sec and using 25MB RAM on X and 31MB on WM.

I use specific apps made by independent devs that using Debian Packages. There is nothing new on a new kernel for old horse, it is simply too old that requires old energy to adapt well.
If i could use kernel 3.2 serie i'll hold even on this version that is more faster lightweight kernel and very robust.

If i had a new machine from 2012 and so on then i will use bloated Kernel, bloated DE and bloated Apps.
Therefore, not surprisingly, people have their specific reasons for selecting old versions, not because they are not aware of new things.

WHY does it matter?

Edward De Bono had a thinking exercise he called PMI. Given a situation people had to write down all the Pluses, all the Minuses and all the Interesting points (that were neither Pluses or Minuses) about that situation.

If you use Kernel A, B or C what are the PMIs of that Kernel.

What is a Plus about using that Kernel, what is a Minus about using that Kernel and what is Interesting about that Kernel.

What makes the Kernel you use significant, better that other Kernels? Or are they, for day-to-day use more or less the same?

The 4.x series kernels don't like my Radeon R7 250 graphics card, they make the vid card fan race, probably because it produces an error and makes my graphics chip run in circles like a chicken with it's head cut off. I STILL don't use systemd, I'm running PCLOS MATE (kernel 3.18.x, for as long as Bill feels like supporting it, he gets bored and starts supporting newer kernels, essentially abandoning older kernels, even though they've been officially patched by kernel devs, he's a bit of a 8==D like that), Ubuntu Xfce 14.04.x (despywared with upstart, Canonical maintained kernel 3.13.x) and last but not least, Devuan Xfce 1.0 (kernel 3.16.x). I've tried higher kernels across ALL of these installed distros, same $#1+, diff distro, so my inner Sherlock says it's the newer bloated, over engineered and systemd infested garbage kernels. I miss the good ol' K.I.S.S. days. :(

Will post the kernel 4.x error after temp installing a newer kernel, stay tuned for an edit to this post.

Edit as promised: Kernel 4.7.4 in PCLOS error...

Update with a little foot-in-mouth, lol...

It seems the Radeon VCE error is supposedly harmless so I installed kernel 4.4.16 in PCLOS (Bill is still a 8==D for abandoning LTS kernels in his repo after he gets bored with them). Anyway, VCE stands for 'Video Coding Engine', and apparently my vanilla R7 250 vid card doesn't support VCE, so basically the kernel thinks my card supports it, attempts to load the driver for it, resulting in the error, which apparently is harmless and should be ignored. I ran a bunch of video tests just to make sure, every thing worked fine. Case closed Sherlock, lol.

Here's a list of kernels and their EOL dates, I try to go with the late as possible kernel EOL dates. I'm way past the bleeding edge tester phase, I'm OK with fairly recent but reliable.

Edit: The 4.4.x kernel has far more features (i.e. tons of different file systems and hardware support, etc) than the 3.x series, waaaaaaay more.

I'm schtickin' with 3.16 in my Devuan install, it runs good and I'm tired of dealing with backports. PCLOS and my netinst despywared Ubuntu Xfce (it's NOT Xubuntu) 14.04.5 are keeping the 4.4 kernels, Canonical is supporting their 4.4 until 2021, I believe. The Ubuntu install is just a backup OS, in case PCLOS and/or Devuan go under.

Code: Select all

kerplunk@Mark-13:~$ uname -a
Linux Mark-13 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u1 (2016-09-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Fun fact, running the same video stress tests in Devuan made my GPU hit 52C, in comparison, in PCLOS with the 4.4 kernel, it ran much cooler, low 40C's. I'm guessing because es2gears runs full blast in Devuan (about 770fps), where as glxgears runs throttled to the monitor parameters in PCLOS (about 60fps), I ran es2gears and glxgears while the other tests were running as well, more stress the better, lol.

If you are replying to Bester, I'm pretty sure that he was referring to the kernel version, not the package/release. That is, that he was using the kernel that kernel.org gave the number 4.7 to and in that context testing is on 4.7.5 now (which is 4.7.0-1 therefore).

But maybe I'm wrong. It is hard to tell, your guys posts are hard to follow. I don't even know if you are replying to some one or not and to whom exactly.

Point releases are normal, and released on a standard schedule. There's always bugs, minor or otherwise, being found and fixed with every point release. Why did you feel the need to publicize this one over all the others?

BTW--the Ubuntu kernel team is not the Debian kernel team, nor the main upstream kernel developers, though nothing keeps them from sharing personnel.

I think differents versions's kernel behave differente in each computer, or, at least i felt that way,

in my case, i recentlly tried 4.7 bpo debian's kernel and 4.8 ubuntu's kernel, and i fell they performance worse than ubuntu's 4.7.6,

this last kernel --> 4.7.6 ubuntu's its working great in my computer, i fell it quicker and smoother, i tried two times others kernel (4.7bpo and 4.8) to see if it was placebo, and i feel they both dont performance as well as 4.7.6 ubuntu's in my laptop, so its kind of extrange, my final conclusion is that every kernel behave different in the same computer.

Now, im pretty happy with kernel's ubuntu 4.7.6

Code: Select all

Linux hall 4.7.6-040706-generic #201609300531 SMP Fri Sep 30 09:33:47 UTC 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux
ill try 4.9 when it comes to see if it give me some gain, and i can keep moving on

Actually they sort of were for a bit:
Will Linux 3.16 get long term support from upstream?
The Linux 3.16-stable branch will not be maintained as a longterm branch at kernel.org. However, the Ubuntu kernel team will continue to maintain that branch, following the same rules for acceptance and review, until around April 2016. Ben Hutchings is planning to continue maintenance from then until the end of regular support for 'jessie'.
