Why? What is to be gained?

I doubt it. Wifi stability is a function of a lot of variables including hardware in your machine and in router/modems.
there are several threads on that in this forum that might be worth your time to explore.

I would really like to know what * advantages* a newer kernel could provide on an older system.

As the system aint broke, really trying to understand reasons to fix it....
I have an older radeon board, r430, and restarting Xserver through KDM would sometimes hang, and sometimes X would not start on a cold boot, with No Screen Found, No Device Found etc. (workaround - # service restart kdm). It seems much more stable using only backported kernel 4.6

On this little Dell, the intel driver had some similar issues, so the xserver-xorg-video-intel-2016520-bpo with the 4.6 kernel has been a good fix.

I started using backports back on squeeze, it can let you maintain an older system without upgrading so often IMO. I still have a wheezy machine running the 3.16 backport that must be three years now?

I think last LTS could be a good choice,
I was using before 4.8.8 and then 4.8.12, Now im using 4.4.34, i checked that it works better than 4.8 brach in my old pc,

My conclusion..> Dont upgrade kernel if your's version performance very well, from vesion to version i find differents behaviors as for performance, and i would say than even for stability you can find differences. So, i decided to stay in that version for long.

Yes,I tried to see,

In my computer It does some things faster, but at the same time it has a weird behavior experience user, For example, sending a Mail from akonadi_maildispacher_agent, it was retained some anormal seconds before it was released. The latence response is also kind of extrange when browsing internet
It has a abrupt render response, so at the moment i give upt this kernel, and going back to 4.4.37 (This last kernel, suits at the perfection my computer, im very very happy with it). I Think i will wait for 4.10 that will be a merge from 4.9, and for then Stretch will be stable, and things will fix better, im sure.

Now I'm trying out Ubuntu Mate Zesty on my desktop Pc with kernel
Linux jfd 4.9.0-040900-lowlatency #201612111631 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 11 21:39:11 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
And nVidia 370 tested diver - (I plan to dual boot with Sid)

My deb-box still runs kernel 4.8.15 no need to fool around with that laptop.

my most current kernel, now that I'm not running Fedora anymore:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /proc/version

and, of course, good old Debian stable...

Code: Select all

russel@u55a:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.16.0-4-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.8.4 (Debian 4.8.4-1) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 (2016-10-19)
