KDE 5 needs more RAM than KDE 4

#1 Post by bester69 »

Ive been testing for about two months KDE5, and ive seen
it's more demanading in RAM and perhaps less demanding in CPU, i think akonadi Framework (Kontact) and others applications are growing in memory RAM needes..

I upgraded my system to 2G RAM, and i was able to work with Jessie + KDE4 , but with Strect+KDE5, ive seen its not enouht to be able to work propertly,

so Stretch + KDE5 -->
- Minímium 3GB
- Recommended 4GB+

Ill have pay for 42€ to upgrade (two new 2GRAMs modules) :?

Sad to hear that. On my machine, KDE5 ran faster than 4 (although this wasn't a comparison between Jessie and Stretch, rather Jessie and some other distro), but I also had 4 GB RAM back then. So, FWIW, at least it makes good use of the RAM.

But I'm sure that this can be reduced a bit by e.g. turning off certain things like file indexing (I never needed that, so back in the KDE 4 days, that saved almost 512 MB RAM).

Also: What about using LXQT with KDE apps?

Gotta be your frankendebian... just fired up a Mint Sara KDE VM with 1GB RAM, and up to 512MB of that dedicated to VRAM, and 1 core of my i5 4590:

with konsole and firefox open:

Code: Select all

mojo@mojo-virtual-sara ~ $ free -m
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:            975         649          86          19         239         129
Swap:          4217          62        4155
firefox takes ~16 seconds to open and be usable. This isn't great, but for a single core, basically ~512MB RAM system it isn't too damn bad either.

So if you can't have a decently usable setup with 2GB RAM and a dedicated GFX card, and presumably at least a dual core CPU it's most likely something on your end. I may just go and tune it down to 512MB and 256 VRAM just for fun, see how bad it is hammering the hell out of my swap. Even then it should still be usable.

:twisted: How did it know?

The U.S. uses the metric system too, we have tenths, hundredths and thousandths of inches :-P

Now, i see:

- Kontact --> 15 akonadi process (x50M) + mysqld = 650M + 129M
- duplicty running = 200M
- Chromium = 350M (1 tab + several extensions)
- plasmashell = 160M
-----------------------------------------------
650 +130 + 200 + 350 +160 = 1500Mb
- the rest of system process/apps= 250M
--------------------------------------
1500+250= 1750M, with just one Chromium tab and a command console running (duplicity)--> so its not enought memory RAM with just 2GB

^ Can you reproduce that memory consumption in the live Neon desktop?

https://neon.kde.org/

I think there is something wrong with your system, those figures are way too high.

Also, how are you measuring this?

I like https://github.com/pixelb/ps_mem or `free -h`

I like https://github.com/pixelb/ps_mem or `free -h`

Code: Select all

bester@hall:~$ free -h
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:           1,9G        1,2G         70M        349M        628M        201M
Swap:          1,5G        574M        994M
I think mate-monitor-system was measuring ram+ram shared, it was a mistake,its less memory for each process/application than reported.

Taking a look at ksysguard:
- Akonadi 130M + mysqld 120M + plasma 110M + Kwin 88M
- Chromium 280M (13 threads)
- rest of process/apps 150M
-------------------------------------------------------
User process= 130+120+110+88+280+150 = 878 M

Mem used: 1,2G (878M + system RAM process)--> 1,2G with just Chromium opened, its still very short of memory to work propertly, in the moment you open some tabs, and libreoffice, and some okular's pdf you start to feel lag (paging/swapping).

So to be fair and correcting the before one, we could say:
so Stretch + KDE5 -->
- Minímium 2 GB
- Recommended 3GB+
