Did you know Skype analyses and reports the contents of your chat? I did not. But I do not use Skype.

The What's Up or "whatsapp", the same thing, not images but the text messages
as well, and I am sure they monitor "face book" very closely as well.
That lady, is in excuse able,...it may sound like a good excuse, but good
greif, for what ever reason or excuse these people use, they are sick, and
criminals,...What about the children that are the victims, and used/abused
to make the sick movies and photos ?,... They people that buy, or download
that garbage are just as guilty as the scuzz that make it,...If they did not have
customers, and people eager to download the garbage, it would not be as
profitable and such a lucrative market.
Some time back, I was at a store, I had stopped there to use the ATM,
I was in the parking lot, getting ready to leave, when a car pulled in, but
no sooner then the driver started to get out, 3 pick ups (police patrols),
pulled in, and surrounded the car, they pulled the driver out, and hand
cuffed him,...and took his cell phone,..some more officials came, in cars.
The whole thing scared me, I mean this guy parked right next to me, I
was in the middle of it all.
Once everything settled down, I asked one of the Captains, what it
was all about,... kind of surprised me that he politely told me, in a nut
shell. The guy they arrested was a suspect, or known gang leader, involved
in drugs, kiddnapping schemes, extortion, etc,...... they had been monitoring phone
calls and his "watts app" messages, and the dummy had sent a message to one of
his partners or friends, saying where they were, and that they would be
there, at a planned meeting location, in half a hour, ...the police, saw
the message, and dispatched the patrols imediately to the location,
arriveing just a few seconds after the criminal did.....
It is good that they can use modern technology to trap, and even convict
the scuzz butts,..
But it is also, something to think about, even if you are a inoccent law abiding
citizen, but don't really want "who knows who is watching" to know every little
detail about where you are etc.
There have also been cases here, where organized groups, use face book,
to get information on people, family, etc,....they then use the information to
do extortion,.... Using the cell phone, they call the "target" or victim, they usually say they have a family member kidnapped, and
have photos, etc,...the targets/victims , are terrified, and all to often fall for it, and
actually pay the money demanded, only to find out later that the "kidnapped"
person, is fine, and never even was kidnapped.
It is a serious problem here, skype, cell phones, watts app, and things like that
are used by both sides, the criminals, and scuzz butts, and the police as well
There also is a fair amount of publicity, trying to convince the victims, to not respond,
but to contact officials,......they have the means to reverse the situation,
the "attacker" becomes the "victim", maybe it is a violation of privacy, but
"privacy" does not make a imoral or criminal act right, or acceptable, nor
legal,...
The same, on the internet, their are far to many, "attackers" trying to access
the "victims" and either do damage, get data they can use, or use the server
as a "bot net" with out the administrators know, (that is what they hope),...
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=130736
What the "attackers" do not know, because of their laziness and
ignorance,... well, what they don't know, is what will catch them, and
reverse the situation. In a nut shell, online, nothing is secret, and nobody
can hide, behind anonymity , proxies, tor browsers, etc. there are ways
to get back to them. People that truely are law abideing and innocent
do not need to worry that much about the "officials" trying to keep the
web and net safe, what they do need to worry about is the "attacker crackers",
that are looking for ways, to rob, extort , or abuse and exploit in anyway
they can.
Just my opinion,...I don't use skype, any way, so no big deal.

You really can't expect any privacy on the net, that's true. Look how deleted Clinton' emails surfaced. You can encrypt your message but your recipient can still be busted and the message recovered. Not that I care much, I do not do anything unlawful, but it kind of disturbed my reading Skype is checking out the attachments. It takes some effort to sniff out what's on the image and detect it is unlawful without human interaction. I think spying on people like this should be outlawed. It is like arresting people on the street, jailing them "just in case" and then releasing them saying: hey, sorry, we found out you are innocent. There should be some kind of court order issued before they can turn on their spy machine on you.

I do agree, the "spying" thing, needs to be carefully controled, etc.

I think in the U.S. there is, there use to be, a law on that on "phone tapping",
they needed a court warrant, aproval,...in other countries,...who knows,...
It is a 6 of one and half dozen of the other, kind of like the gun laws, either
way the criminals will use them, legal or not,...and every body becomes
a criminal, because they own a gun to protect them selves, from the other
that are armed,.... the same, criminals would not pay any attention to any
laws that say a court order is needed before they can monitor "data flow",
skype, etc,...and so any time the police or real officials get some information
that might help build a case, and put the crimianl behind bars, if they did not
have the "warrant" or court order, the case gets thrown out, the criminal goes
free,...
The article on the skype thing does not mention that, if they had a court order
or not,...

Well using ANY 3rd party service will upload everything you type to their servers (you have history stored there too). They can do whatever they want with it actually. Unless you use some end-to-end encryption (OTR/OMEMO, zrtp), they will have access to everything you upload, type or say.
No news here.
Only solution to use a service that ACTUALLY and verifiably offers end-to-end encryption or host your own chat server.

I've found a (2013) reference to Microsoft analysing also the hyperlinks sent through Skype's chat:

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/13/05/14 ... t-messages

But, what would you expect, from a company that even uses such a software to "read" (/steal) your passwords?:

I just *love* the stability, much more bug-free nature, and modular installation options of Debian. Apart from the unfortunate adoption of "systemd" (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=129881&start=165#p671030) this distribution is *great*.

About the court order issue... What if the user contract that you sign when you register an account specifically states that the user voluntarily gives up any such rights? I am not a lawyer and have not read the contract, but I would not be surprised to learn that this is indeed the case.

In any case, what I'm trying to say is that in such a case the situation is not comparable with tapping a phone.

It's exactly because you are decent people, that you should worry about surveillance from powerful entities.

(What if you discover that the corporations that produce these kind of programs are involved in crimes, and you try to denounce them? - You know, like, Bill Gates is involved in eugenics programs: http://www.prisonplanet.com/bill-gates- ... posed.html - Don't you think that such corporations would use all the information they have on you, to try to stop you from denouncing them?)

And, most importantly...

What if the Democracy that you live in turns into a Dictatorship? (Like it happened in Germany, Italy, and even in my country - Portugal.) Would you like such a dictatory government (or corporations behind it, like in Fascist regimes) to already have a huge file one you?

Do you think that such government's corrupt officials would allow you to prosecute them for their crimes? And, what would happen when you would simply speak out against injustices and those crimes committed by that same government? (Don't you think that the government would eventually come after you, with the help of all the information they had on you?)

Governments are perfect hidding places for criminals - since that, if you write the laws and control the police, you can make sure that the "system" never goes after you, and that you can keep on abusing people.

Look, for example, at how (even in the Democracies that we nowadays have) only the common pe*ophiles are arrested, and that, when it comes to people with government connections, everything is done to stop investigations (https://sputniknews.com/europe/201508051025409195/ + https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlQAJR9KZ60).

The modern-day "surveillance society" that we have is, like Richard Stallman says, "Stalin's wet dream".

(Listen to the great lecture that he gave, a few years ago: https://vimeo.com/28195912)
