Just thought I would share the tree that our department has decorated in our spare time.

On January 4, 1643, Isaac Newton was born in the hamlet of Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England (using the "old" Julien calendar, Newton's birth date is sometimes displayed as December 25, 1642).

Well if the "old" Calendar was used at that time then its Dec. 25th....after all Jesus was most likely born in the summer but thats another discussion for another forum.

Christmas – atmosphere everywhere, decorations, christmas trees, xmas gifts, parties, Santa claus...it is a celebration of Capitalism, not just a celebration of Christianity. The elderly are dumped in care homes for Christmas by children who have become obsessed with Capitalist values that know no humanity. It is now, yes, you can thank the Victorians and Germans for that. And it used to be a celebration of the Winter Solstice before the Christians adapted it to their own agenda.

Best way to celebrate it is to get together with people you care about and feast. As for presents? We are having a 'no present' policy this year.

as for christmas: it's depressing.
started off as a way to force pagans into christianity, ended up as a way to force christians into mammon worshipping (though probably nobody forced them).
i was forced to spend an empty 30minutes in a shopping mall yesterday, with a 9-year old kid. that was particularly depressing.
i will try to ignore the next 2 days as much as possible. it's just a weekend.

It's become an annual sale when the shops raise their prices. Everyone is expected to shell out their hard-earned cash on costly Christmas presents. Even Christmas cards are expensive.
