[/thread] Brave web browser

#1 Post by qyron »

According to this browser web site dowload page, it is already available in dev version in the Debian repos, I assume in the Sid branch.
Anyone has had the opportunity to try it out?

I can't find anything that indicates it is in the Debian resositories,..
https://wiki.debian.org/WebBrowsers

However I did find this:
Official Home of Brave web browser. We build the web of the future. The new Brave browser blocks all the greed and ugliness on the Web that slows you down and invades your privacy. Then we put clean ads back, to fund website owners and Brave users alike. Users can spend their funds to go ad-free on their favorite sites.
Interesting, so they do:

I can't help it that you exhibit chronic problems with reading comprehension.

If you like the idea of having ads and tracking built into your Web browser, far be it for me to steal your joy. But don't be even remotely surprised if you are in the minority.

I must have some trouble with reading comprehension too, since I went over the site quickly and couldn't find anything about it being in upstream Debian. Could you help me out?

I read the text in the button where it said "dev version available for Debian/Ubuntu".

Has I had never heard nothing about this browser, with the text as it was, I was induced in error. Mea culpa.

yes, i did.
it's been on my system for many months and at first i was taken by the idea of simplifying privacy options.
but eventually i realised:

- and removed it again.
also see here:

PS:
also it's YACC (yet another chromium clone).

Brave is kind of shitty beta browser, use opera browser, they are doing a great job, they're launching many versions/update every week. Im using since five months Opera 42, they are now in Opera 43 i think, the browser feels lighter than chromium/chrome and its same stable.

They're giving supoort to Windows/liunx and Mac platforms.., they are doing a serious work.. 8)

Here you can see as an example the Changelog of version 42 and its evolution and development:

Except that since pepperflashplugin-nonfree is broken in Debian currently, the Flash plugin has to be manually downloaded and installed for Opera, if you need Flash. Imagine trying to talk an non-technical user through that over the phone. Though we do have a fixed version in the MX repos now... 8)

Apparently not in Debian, but they distribute a .deb on their page. Why not download it & try? ...In some virtual machine or something.

Their site also has a "Linux FAQ"
https://github.com/brave/browser-laptop ... Install.md

A page that tells you how you can add their repo to sources.list

I'm starting to get the feeling I have a slight tendency to spark intense argument exchange when I ask a question.

Yeah, my fix was to get it to build on 32-bit, which they forgot to add for the Sid version, and changed the description, since the Sid version still says it's downloading Chrome and pulling the plugin from it. They were simple fixes, I don't know why it hasn't been fixed upstream.

Actually, no.

I'm most probably the last person in whatever group I may find myself into to want and cause ruckus. If we evolved the capability to communicate and express our ideas and points of view, resorting to force, in whatever form it may take, is the last thing we should do.

What you are probably going to find with this crop of "safer, more secure..." browsers (there are currently several out there testing the waters) is basically a lack of functionality in terms of plugin and extension support. Which is fine of course if you don't need that stuff, but that's kind of antithetical to many people's purpose in web browsing to start with, so...
Nobody would ever ask questions If everyone possessed encyclopedic knowledge of the man pages.
