[CLOSED] Error 410 (web browsing)

#1 Post by qyron »

I'm facing a "410 Gone - nginx" message on a single website, only from my desktop. I've tried accessing the website via Firefox and Chromium with the same results.

The site is available and working; I can access it and on my smartphone, using Firefox Klar. It is owned by a company; it's not a sketchy website. This is making me believe I have something wrong on my end.

The website in question is locate at http://www.fdredes.pt

Can someone lend a hand on this subject?

I get "410 Gone" too. I'm using a VPN which might have something to do with it. Try turning off any extensions in your browser. There are sites out there that reject any browser that doesn't allow third party cookies, Java, Flash and/or a scan of your computer. Whatever. When I front up against one of those I move on. I don't want their crap. Sites like that are definitely not your best friend.

Another possibility is that it is simply a badly made site. Try tuning your browser to imitate Windows Internet Explorer. If it thinks you are using Windows you might get in.

Do a search on https://www.startpage.com/. The owner of that site has several pages and you might find another way in. I did get into a Facebook page. It has a picture of what looks like a prison yard. Is it? Is there a government screen on that website? Or is it an industrial site with good protection?

It's an industrial site. They fabricate and supply nettings, wires, fence posts and everything in between.

I run a pretty "stock" Firefox. No extensions.

I've been unable to install Flash on my systems since I upgraded to Debian 8 (9? I keep losing track of version number). Or should I say: I can install Flash but Firefox won't recognize the extension. I've lost access to a good casual gaming site (GameDesign) because of that.

Regarding cookies and the whole lot, I allow for visited sites to set cookies but I have my browser configured to delete all of that junk on closing.

There is a lot of that on the "web" these days,... I get the same error, using
Seamonkey, and FireFox,.. any well designed site is never a problem for me.

You shouldn't need that, any well designed website won't require it.

Interesting, with "links", I can connect to it just fine. So one thing for sure
you don't need "flash" or any of that.

Next time you lose track of version numbers, navigate to /etc/debian_version, that file has the revision number for your system. When you ask a question, it is wise to include the version of Debian you are using.

http://www.fdredes.pt/
Does not work, because they are using that god awful invention:
"https" and they do not allow a http option, all the startpage results still point toward the "http" version, and the site admin did not configure the https
correctly, it does not re-direct, nor allow the"http" option.
https://www.fdredes.pt/
Works, but it says it is a security risk, bla, bla.

You do have to jump through the https hoops, and select "I understand the risks", etc. After I choose the exception, and give a ok, it connects fine. They don't have it configured correctly, ssl and https really is for the birds

I'm feeling dumber and dumber each time I try...

After adding a security exception for the site, this is what I get.

I apologize but I can't remember right now how I can insert only a thumbnail.

They must be working on the site, that is different then earlier today,
Do you not speak Portugese ?, it says the site is under maintenance.

Where it says, "contact-nos" (obvious: Contact us ) is another link, and it seems to work, but it is another "marketting" site, so I am not posting
the url, it was http though. If you can not read Potugese, you will need to
use google translate, or some translator.
I don't think I would trust this site very much, with or with out the ssl,
I have seen a lot of e-mail spam from the one site, that the (contact us)
links to, but that is another topic.
Have you ever actually done business with these people ?, I mean like
actually bought something ? If you have , you should have some way to contact them by e-mail , phone number or something.
I would at least wait, and see if they get the website working correctly,
something is wrong, that is why they are down for maintenance.
I still can access it using Links, and the http address, but even links can not access the https address, it says the same message.
The website my bank has was down not to long ago, it took them
several days to get it running again. A similar situation, and then
for a while some people could connect , but others no.
I apologize but I can't remember right now how I can insert only a thumbnail
with imgur it is very easy, remember "s" for small,

Code: Select all

just add the s , at the end of the image number, but before the .png

i tried to open the site on my mozilla based browser, and same message.
then i tried it on a webkit browser that allows ALL scripts by default, and it's there!
facit: badly designed. a site should always degrade gracefully. this one doesn't, no doubt because of javascript and tons of redirections.

Thanks for the help.

I just called the company and I was told that some times they get people reporting the site is not working properly. The assistant even told me she was just going through the site as we were speaking, using Chrome, and everything was fine.

They were nice enough to send me a full catalogue on pdf and will be checking with their web designer. Who supposedly is an in-house tech.

Again, thanks for the help.

EDIT
Yes. I do speak portugues; I'm native. I've known this company for some time now and purchased some items from their stock in the past. The site was shutdown a few months back and I assumed it had went out of business. It was only while searching for barbed wire on my phone that I got a hit on that company again but the site is hard to navigate on smartphone. When it didn't respond on my desktop, I started feeling more and more dumb as I tried my best to figure out what was the problem, hence, my plea for help here.

here's the thing.
they need to test with all sorts of browsers (even outdated ones).
and imho a website that stops working without javascript is broken: http://webtips.dan.info/graceful.html
