Net neutrality and you.

#1 Post by n_hologram »

Since America faces a significant overhaul with their internet regulation policies, thanks to a hypercorporatist FCC staff, I was wondering how net neutrality might affect you.

I know that many of you live outside the U.S. However, I also know that a lot of companies' home bases are located in, well, America; so I'm wondering if other countries will experience some reverberations as a consequence. I'm also curious if this will affect nations that already enforce outrageous internet regulatory policies; and, if you live in a nation that vicegrips its users' internet freedom, what's your experience like (any words of wisdom to offer)?

For anyone who does live in the U.S. and wants to actually speak up against the repeal while there is still some semblance of time, I'm going to leave this here:
Call your elected representatives
202-930-8550
And say:
I support "Title Two" net neutrality rules and I urge you to oppose the FCC's plan to repeal them. Specifically, I'd like you to contact the FCC Chairman and demand he abandon his current plan.

This will doubtless have a ripple effect over in the UK. The Conservative gvmt have been clamping down us for years now, and it's got worse since the Snoopers Charter went through. I am a member of Liberty who strongly opposes it. As of Apr 2018 people will be required to enter their credit card details to access any porn site in the UK, and that will only be the thin end of the wedge and a slippery slope. The Conservatives say they are doing this to 'protect the children' - it's always been their line - when it's about nothing other than votes.

I've been considering getting a VPN but I don't know how much difference it can make. I have, sadly, come to the acceptance that everything we do digitally is recorded and monitored and there's not much we can do, apart from being careful about going too far with our outspokenness. It's sadly Orwellian, restricting free speech ends up restricting free thought and I know that many in my peer group are far less outspoken than they used to be in the 2000s. People are just too easily offended and scared these days.

In an ironic twist the Melon Farmers website is down so I can't check for updates.
