Gaim=>Pidgin

#1 Post by benuski »

Gaim, following a secret legal battle with AOL, has been forced to change its name. I personally think its dumb that since Gaim is an instant messaging program and has "aim" in it, it has to change its name.

Here's the full story:

Very interesting. They really did a good job keeping this long running battle with AOL secret. I really like their new domain for their new website www.pidgin.im

lol, the website it has a "what is giam" page, that doesnt seem to know that the name of the project has changed.

so it was called "Giam" for a long time happily then aol trademarked "aim", how does that make "Gaim" in the wrong, didnt they have the name first, or should they have regestered the name"Giam".

AOL have been ****** up the Internet for years. I'm suprised they didnt wave their e-penis in the wind like they are earlier

Does this mean that if I want to take up archery again I'm no longer allowed to aim? Sounds dangerous...

Hate the new name and the new library name (libpurple).

From now on, I will refer to my IM client as "the instant messenger client formerly known as GAIM".

One word: Kopete!
Luckily it has such a stupid name that they are likely to get to keep it... :)

There is no such thing as "intellectual property" it is a misnomer dreamed up by a lawyer trying to justify the idiocy of software patents.

Are you sure there is no such thing as intellectual property?

Yes, there is no such thing as intellectual property. Copyright and trade marks do not need a blanket term.

Unless of course you feel that you can own an idea and charge people for it. :roll:

What you or I think about IP is irrelevant. It does exist and it isn't going away.
