HP ProDesk 600 G3 - Comments?

#1 Post by bedtime »

I'm thinking of getting an HP ProDesk 600 G3 with i7-7700 and 250G SSD. Here is the exact computer that I'm talking about:

https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp ... 1788.aspx?

I'm looking for a computer that will carry me for about 5 to 10 years and that can be depended upon. I thought it prudent to check in and see if anyone has had negative experiences with this series. Apparently it has the slots to be upgraded to 64G of ram. It has an Intel graphics driver, which is supposed to be most easiest to get working, and it likely won't support a powerful graphics card as it doesn't seem to have a lot of bay room or the power supply to handle it; though, I don't do games, so it's not really a big deal for me.

Would like some feedback. Have to purchase at BestBuy because I have a whole bunch of gift certificates which I can use there.

well i'm sure you heard about all the trouble intel has gotten itself into?
in addition to the free spy engine you get with each processor.
if i had a thousand euros to spend, not sure if it would be for an intel processor...
also i prefer the approach of components - it's always cheaper when you upgrade only when you need it, instead of spending insane amounts of money for something that's supposed to last a decade.

debiman,

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.

I looked up the 'Intel Management Engine', and that sounds more creepy than anything I've heard of yet; even Koontz couldn't touch this:

This has actually got me a little depressed.

No, but could you give me a very brief description or a link to refer to? I would like to hear.

Is there another name brand that you would recommend? Also, I wonder of AMD suffers the same fate?

you have the keywords now, you can search any forum or the wild web for
  • Intel ME (they say you can risk bricking your device, and maybe succeed disabling it through some firmware flashing)
  • Spectre & Meltdown (kernels are now patched, there's a performance penalty, and in retrospect I suspect that it's harmless compared to ME).
AMD have their own ME, and either of Spectre or Meltdown also affects their hardware.
raspberry pi and other SBCs stand in a very good light at the moment.
or maybe it's really time to go looking for open hardware: https://riscv.org/2018/02/sifive-launch ... based-soc/

They are all sold out; and they vastly exceeded their crowd funding goal.

Seems like quite a new project. Likely would take time to work out the kinks.

As for the pi's, this looks like fun:

It's even preloaded with software to get you started! Might think of making my next purchase a raspberry pi. :D
