Which alcohol for cleaning hardware?

Postby tien07 » 2007-04-12 08:58

Hello,

I would like to clean some of my hardware. Which alcohol is better, the 70% or the 99%? Is alcohol even a good idea for cleaning my hardware? Especially the CDs/DVDs.

Should I just soak the cloth a little or have it damp?

Since nobody has answered thus far, I'll try to tackle it. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "hardware". Optical media, or any media for that matter, generally isn't included in that definition.

For cleaning CDs and DVDs, just try to find out what's in the commercial cleaning solutions.

For your monitor, just dust it off. Using something like Windex could strip off stuff like anti-glare coatings.

For the keyboard and mouse, a wet rag or some general purpose cleaner should do the trick. Just don't submerge them, as they do still have some electronics buried amidst all of that plastic.

Same goes for the outside of your case, itself.

For inside the case, get a can of compressed air and blow it out, preferably in a well-ventilated area. The inside shouldn't be dirtier than anything that a few blasts of air can handle.

Hope that helps!

My guess would be 99% alcohol because you want it to evaporate as quickly as possible. But make sure you get the right type of alcohol. This is to clean dirty hardware, which you really should not have anyway.

To clean dusted hardware, use compressed air.

To clean an LCD use a specially made micro-fiber cloth without solution. Never use normal cloth as it will ruin your LCD in time. If you mark your screen with a pen, use one of those LCD wet wipes or make your own solution. Taking off a pen mark requires great effort: about 20 minutes of continuos rubbing! And make sure you are careful, you can damange an LCD screen easily with the wrong solution.

In the end, you should only need an LCD micro-fiber cloth and compressed air. Everything else is really just for emergencies and should not be required but once every few years at most.

A cheap bottle of rubbing alcohol from Walgreens is all I ever use.

I use those disposable electrostatic sweeping cloths to get the dust off my screens. It works really well on the laptop where the screen is so shiny that even a few specks of dust become distracting. When the cloth gets too dusty then I use it to sweep up all the dog hair off the floor.
