I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I have a DELL Inspiron 3793 laptop that currently runs Linux Mint 20 flawlessly. I'm trying to run RescaTux from a USB drive to help me troubleshoot an intermittent boot problem I've been having, and I cannot get the program to boot in its latest version, which is based on Debian Buster. The previous version, which is based on Debian Stretch, loads fine. I thought at first that it was a problem with RescaTux, so I tried it with a Live USB of Buster 10.6 by itself, and I kept getting xserver errors that cycled repeatedly. I then tried a live USB of Debian Stretch, and it loaded fine (I couldn't find my wireless network, but that's another issue). I'm not familiar with Debian, so I'm not sure what my next step is. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Live USB won't load
Distros based on Debian are not supported here as we can't know what changes they make from Debian. For your Debian boot problem, xserver errors indicate a graphics issue so it would help to post details of your graphics card/s and also post the exact errors you are getting.

Understandable. I figure if I get Debian Buster working, RescaTux should work.sunrat wrote:Distros based on Debian are not supported here as we can't know what changes they make from Debian. Re: Live USB won't load
I keep getting an Internal Server Error when I try to attach the image, so hopefully this link will work: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1unj0E7 ... sp=sharing
Re: Live USB won't load
Unfortunately, this is really not the appropriate forum for helping you figure out how to get RescaTux to boot. You should try to locate support for RescaTux.PiperKev wrote:I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this, but I'm not sure where else to ask. If the previous version loads fine, why don't you use it to help you diagnose your problem with Linux Mint?PiperKev wrote:The previous version, which is based on Debian Stretch, loads fine.

Re: Live USB won't load
That is a 2020 Intel tenth-generation laptop, and the graphics are known not to be compatible with Buster's stock video drivers, kernel, and firmware, since those date back to the end of 2018 or so. If Rescatux uses the same packages, no wonder it doesn't get to a GUI.
Are you certain that the same laptop was fine with Stretch? Pardon me if I am skeptical...
You'll need to use a rescue disk based on a newer distrelease, or one with a lot of backports on top of Buster.

Re: Live USB won't load
It wasn't exactly "fine", but it did load to the point where I had a desktop. but it didn't find my wireless network, and I didn't play much with it beyond that. I believe I've found a workaround using MXLinux.stevepusser wrote:That is a 2020 Intel tenth-generation laptop, and the graphics are known not to be compatible with Buster's stock video drivers, kernel, and firmware, since those date back to the end of 2018 or so.
