Re: Microsoft repo secretly installed on all Raspberry Pi’s
I have a first generation Raspberry Pi, model B. It has been online pretty much 24/7/365 since 2012. It doesn't even have a GUI. Still, a new repository was added with no notification whatsoever.
Their explanation was even more insulting, basically that users were too stupid to work out how to add the repository for themselves, in case they wanted it, so everyone got it.
Clowns.
Thank goodness for https://raspi.debian.net/

Re: Microsoft repo secretly installed on all Raspberry Pi’s
All the people whining about this are stupid. Raspbian / Raspberry OS decided they wanted a dev environment for their DEV BOARDS, and decided on VSCode. Deal with it.
To add further insult to injury here, the same idiots whining about having an APT repo added, would have been whining that there was no way to get security or bug updates to VSCode since there was no repository for it. And apparently don't care that the exact same info gets sent to the owners of the Raspberry repos, which are also a business.

Pretty much my viewpoint as well.pendrachken wrote:All the people whining about this are stupid. Raspbian / Raspberry OS decided they wanted a dev environment for their DEV BOARDS, and decided on VSCode. Deal with it.

That's all fine but couldn't they at least notify that said repo would be added and give users the option whether they want it to or not? I don't own a Raspberry device and use VSCodium, the appimage, no MS repo is needed to keep it updated. No telemetry either. Works great and most VSC extensions are available too. https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium/re ... tag/1.53.0pendrachken wrote:All the people whining about this are stupid. I think most of these "idiots" were unhappy with an unacknowledged third party potentially getting unrestrained root access to their systems, merely by running an upgrade.

Re: Microsoft repo secretly installed on all Raspberry Pi’s
The really outrageous thing is that the Raspbian developers added it to the main component of their repositories, which is in complete violation of Debian Policy. The bastards...

i used this quide

to survive until I get Debian installed to my spare RPI 1B which HDMI connector is broken. Currently trying preseed installation.

I was going to get a rpi4 but dont believe i will bother now that they have partnered with microsoft, i say partnered loosely here mind you. I believe once you let them in you may as well put that sticker on side of the case.

Hello dice, fancy seeing you here
De??an users should avoid Raspberry Pi devices, they rely on binary blobs to boot and for their video chips. The platform is inherently proprietary.dice wrote:I was going to get a rpi4

I don't have any single board computers but I would probably go for HiFive's new Unmatched board 'cos RISC-V.dice wrote:any recommendations ?
The Debian wiki has some (probably outdated) recommendations: https://wiki.debian.org/RaspberryPi#Sho ... erry_Pi.3F
But you should probably open a new thread for this, it is off-topic here.

Re: Microsoft repo secretly installed on all Raspberry Pi’s
More ramblings ... Gnu/Linux .. Debian and open source long since cured me of the bane of Microsoft too, so since I don't need them for any of my computing needs I'm happier now. Surely I've already said it in this thread but if did get a Pi of course it's going to have pure Debian on it. I get that people need to make money, it's business but have often found someone can do that without having to be scummy or all this corporate sleaze.
Still don't doubt there are tons of people who don't/won't do business that way. Even if it seems scumtastic is the new SOP = standard operating procedure, are plenty of good people remaining too. Always has been, always will be.

Re: Microsoft repo secretly installed on all Raspberry Pi’s
Yesterday downloaded 2021-03-04-raspios-buster-armhf-lite, and when booted it on my RPi 1.0 saw message 'blocking vscode repo" and later "removing 3rd party sources".
Seems the discussion has turned raspberry-foundations head
