Not quite true - there was an open standard(in more or less the modern sense of the term) that came out before the PC, but it was advertized only as a game console and eventual got given up on(it did, however, attract at lot of business attention in the lower end).Kerr wrote:Regardless of what you may be thinking of Bill Gates.

Further not quite true. IBM was prevented by court decision from dominating both the hardware and software market. It was called unbundling and it occured in the era of the 360 mainframes when 99% of the hardware and software could only be obtained from IBM. So when big blue produced the pc they could either sell the hardware or the os, but not both. They elected to sell the machines and farm out the os development. They took bids and Gates lied his way into the contract.

At least the SideWinder gamepads, the mice, as well as Age of Empires are very good products.

Check out Youtube.
I've seen a clip before.
Bill Gates said the Apple is a good computer.
In my opinion, Steve Jobs is the father of the PC.

What about the guy who designed the Altair? IMO whoever got computers into homes first is the father of the PC.
Re: Bill Gates, the father of the PC?
Altairs were being sold as kits or complete computers when the apple 1 was only a printed circuit card without the rest of the computer.sir fer wrote:What about the guy who designed the Altair? IMO whoever got computers into homes first is the father of the PC.
Contrary to the wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer
the altair was available not only as a kit but also as a complete computer with floppy disk drive, before the comodore pet (which I did buy because it was available locally but the altairs had all sold out and the cost of importing them put the price out of my reach at the time). The apple II was later and about twice the price.
IMO, since the Altair was available as both a kit and a complete pc, being bought and used before others, it deserves the title.

Re: Bill Gates, the father of the PC?
Bill Gates might donate billions of dollars, but it appears as though a generous chunk of that money goes to advancing his own causes. Perhaps he can rationalize some of his tactics, but at the very least, you should think twice before assuming one of the richest men in the world has your best interests in mind.

Apparently, he can bring long dead threads back from the grave, too.
Look into the black mirror and say, "Bill Gates! Bill Gates! Bill Gates!"

Re: Bill Gates, the father of the PC?
The PC has been the product of multiple fathers.
So that article was published ten years ago. When it comes questions such as human activity on a global scale, you really have to think small. These cleaner solutions only make sense if you do it on a small and manageable scale. Human activity only makes sense if you do it on a manageable scale. We're shouldn't be looking at a runaway scenario that escalates consumption without limits. Mass consumption at the moment is just untenable. It's a terrible situation.
