Dual Core CPU (Whos Got Em'?)

#1 Post by Carlosinfl »

Anyone have a new Dual Core AMD or Intel CPU on their Debian/Linux box?

I thought you only needed that if you ran windows, to make up for all the anti-this anti-that and anti-something-else programs running in the background (:

I have a dual core laptop. I just wanted to say for those running dual core intel systems you need to be using the smp kernels otherwise you don't harness all that dual core has to offer.

Are those the kernels labeled with "64" in the name?

No, they are SMP kernels.

Look here...

If you are running 64-bit the only way to exploit their full potential is installing the AMD64 port. Then you need to install an SMP kernel so you can use the dual core.

Can someone give a brief rundown of how to do this when starting with a fresh install. Is there a parameter you can pass when installing to get this loaded correctly?

The kernel or the whole port? If you want the whole port you can't just use the i386 version, you need a whole new set of CDs.

Dual Core

#10 Post by Light_Tech »

I use dual PIII 's in my main box but I'm afraid my info won't help. I haven't had the experiance of using PIV chips. Although I can say that I haven't seen any single prossor boxs' that perform as well 2.4GHz or not.

I have a Pentium D 805, SMP kernel installed by default.

Its not as usefull in linux as it is in windows, but still helps. especially with games like quake 4 witch have optimised dual core support.

My fps without dual core = 55 on medium settings, with dual core = 80 on medium settings.

Pentium D 805 is quite poor dual core processor. I have Pentium D 930 at 3,6Ghz (overclocked a little) and have very big advantage when using smp kernel on my amd64 arch. Good thing is now i don't need to install smp kernel, cos smp is supported by default in new kernels - thanks to developers. But i have qemu with windows and debian-i386 running. May be for users who doesn't use so hard programms it doesn't do much help.
I hate to boot into X
