I'm buying a new computer!

#1 Post by junkman »

Hello!

I love the computer store near my house here :D
They have a service where you can build a computer on their website and then pick it up from the store after 2 weeks.
The wonderful thing is, you can select whether you want Windoze, SUSE Linux or no OS at all!

The computer pack I'm going to buy is this:
--------------------------------------------------
Processor: Intel Pentium D 930 Dual Core (S775, 3.0 GHz, 800 MHz, 2x2MB)
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu (1000-2000 RPM, 20-32dB)
Motherboard: Asus P5LD2 (i945P, S775 Dual Core, PCI-E, DDR2, ATX)
ATX Case: CoolerMaster Cavalier CAV-T03 Black
Power Supply: Antec SmartPower 2.0 (SP-450PEC, 450W)
RAM Memory: Kingston 1024MB (PC5400, DDR2, 667MHz)
Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar RE 250GB (SATA II)
Floppy Drive: Sony 1.44Mb 3.5" Floppy Drive Black
Disc Drive: LG GSA-H10NRBB (DVD+-RW Dual Layer, 16x8x10x)
Graphic Card: Asus Radeon X1300 Pro 256MB (PCI-E, TV-OUT/DVI)
Operating System: None

Price: Only 970.00€ !
I just wanted to share this information incase someone of you know some unsupported hardware above which doesn't work in Debian.
Debian, a mystery..

Noooooooo!!!! Do a search on this forum for Asus. You'll find a multitude of problems with them. Choose anything except Asus. I've had good luck with Gigabyte, DFI and MSI.

Processor: Intel Pentium D 930 Dual Core (S775, 3.0 GHz, 800 MHz, 2x2MB) why P D930 ?? so Intel Core 2 Duo (conroe - the lowest model E6300) is more better

I've been running Debian on an Asus notebook (L3000) for a couple of years. No problem what so ever except a slight problem with the CD burner which turned out to be a HW failure. Maybe their newer stuff is different though...

I'll have to check that about Asus motherboards..
I checked the website of my computer store, and they have only Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Allendale. Would you say it's better than the Pentium D930?

By the way, if the processor is S775 Dual Core, does the motherboard have to support S775 Dual Core, or is it ok if it only supports S775??

Funny, I have an MSI and would happily burn it. My advice is to stay away from MSI. The guys at the local LUG advise ASUS.

This is a good issue. I suspect that there are many hardware componets that perform adequately under Windows, but not under Linux. I also suspect that the average Linux user will notice hardware performance problems because the OS works. Windows users are so buried under viruses and worms and an host of Windows bugs that hardware problems slip under the wire.

Take a look at: http://www.chrisshort.net/archives/2005 ... bility.php and http://www.chrisshort.net/archives/2005 ... bility.php . Are there any others?

I have a Asus P4C800E-Deluxe with soundcard and network card onboard and I can confirm it works well. After all, why shouldn't it? Asus is the best motherboard manufacturer in my opinion.

Well, thank you for recommending Asus motherboards, but is there anybody who can answer my above question?

If, the processor is Socket 775 Dual Core, does the motherboard have to support Socket 775 Dual Core, or is the support for just Socket 775 enough?

Maybe my question is complex... let's try it like this:

I will buy the processor Debian Dummy 3.2Ghz Socket 775 Dual Core.
Then, which motherboard should I buy?

1. Debian Mobo Pro Socket 775 Dual Core
or
2. Debain Mobo Socket 775 ??

Thank you!

I would pick door number 1 to make sure it's compatible...

Ok thanks! I was sure that it had muvh meaning.
However, the only S775 Dual Core motherboard in the computer store near me is the one I mentioned in my first post.
Have to check it's compatibility.

BTW, does anybody know a list where I can see what programs are shipped with Debian Netinst?

Thanks

Only the base is actually on the netinst CD, the rest is just downloaded off the net. You can just apt-get like normal.

The netinstall contains just the minimal amount of software to start the installation and fetch the remaining packages over the Internet.

I guess there isn't a list to see what exactly comes with it. But its very minimum. Takes up less than 1gb, around 500mb or less.

Well, made some research and found this page:
http://dir.filewatcher.com/d/Debian/i386/base.0.0.htm
It says pretty respectively from a-z what applications are included in the Debian base package. (I needed this information to check if the Debian base has dpkg installed, and it has).

Um, yeah, dpkg is generally installed by default because without it you can't install the rest of base...

It's Section: base, Priority: required, Essential: yes, which pretty much means it's installed on any installation no matter what.

i think that this combination is fine, but if i were you i wouldn't buy an ati display card. ati drivers is the wortst proprietary software i ever installed in my computer.it's a very risky solution, if you are interested in 3d acceleration(works with problems, for example my raden 9600 pro works 3d, only by forcing agp 1x).
