Debian Jessie KDE 64 bit
Panel moved to top of screen, populated with some of my favourite icons, and 'icon style' (widget) tray after the two desktop panels (where clicking the current desktop panel is set to show desktop (minimise all windows). RadioTray, BlueDevil and pavucontrol added to right hand side of panel. Date/time in my preferred format and a shutdown/logout close button rightmost in the panel.
Bottom left corner is a hot corner - that when mouse into brings up Present Windows for easy window switching
Boot frugally (extended LiveCD installed to HDD) so mostly just three files, initrd, vmlinuz and filesystem.squashfs i.e. all of filesystem contained in a read only compressed filesystem. Boots using grub4dos, persistence (save partition) set to be the same partition as where grub and the filesystem are stored. Options to boot read only (with further option to flush changes recorded in memory to disk if so desired), or read/write, which is comparable to a full install with all changes being immediately written to disk (disk-cache).
lzo level 1 compressed filesystem, so around half the size (data IO) and very fast decompression (400MB/core on a 4 core system).
Further option to 'remaster' all changes stored on disk (persistence partition) into the main filesystem.squashs and clear out the persistence partition.
2GB .. which is enough to have most of my popular/usual programs all cached.

Re: What does your desktop look like?
It was actually one of the default wallpapers with Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.
This is the photographers site:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/fgr1986/9 ... 484760@N20
If you want higher resolution, you need to snag it from the Ubuntu archives:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ub ... rs/14.04.1
Tried the rest... Now using the best!
