Debian and openSUSE Leap vms. I am trying to set up the desktop on opensuse. Much easier to get mate on Debian.

Yes, you are absolute right. Also, it is very stable and lightweight. On cold startup, with default configuration, it uses only 200 mb. of RAM (x64 bit. machine).

Ahh yes, the good ol' days. It was great, until it turned in to a huge ball of snoop, complete with processes you couldn't shut off without bringing the whole DE down (reminds of a certain proprietary DE). Isn't KDE systemd's b1+c# now too? How sad. :(

I've been using Xfce and MATE (in order of preference) ever since.
