Pretty useful for my 6 years old ThinkPad X230.
Bad news for you, Addy. The vaapi patch for chromium is disabled in Buster. So you're not going to get it with that version...how to check this? If the video_decoder value is MojoVideoDecoder (previously it was GpuVideoDecoder, but now the Chromium builds use MojoVideoDecoder on Linux) it means that the video that's currently playing on YouTube in the other tab is using hardware-accelerated video decoding. If it says FFmpegVideoDecoder (it says in your picture) or VpxVideoDecoder, accelerated video decoding is not working. Here proof:
Aww
I read it somewhere that Chromium on Debian support hardware acceleration

Good grief, that's amazing
And for your number of packages in the system info script you should just count the lines beginning with "ii", like this:
Code: Select all
packages="$(dpkg -l | grep -c ^ii)"
Boring old GNOME for me:

Enjoying firefox-esr's new GTK3+ theming:
Titlebars are bloat
Also, is it just me or has it got less noisy in here recently?
EDIT: somebody will have to tell me if the noisy little bar-steward starts posting spam links, I can't see their posts any more. Please use the report button for that, TIA.

Here's my Buster setup - There's no desktop.
It's my home server that I run headless, and without a GUI (yet anyway, might install xfce at some point). This is the login via the motherboard's IPMI.
I'm delighted to back using Debian again, after an 8 or so year absence. I'm ashamed to say my server was running Windows Server up until last week.

I tried out a new Stretch install with the Xfce desktop on a now 12 year old laptop that took me through college back in the day just to amuse myself during the lockdown here in Ireland.
I'm really surprised at how well it runs. It still can hang a little if you try to do too much at once, but it's light-years faster than Windows 10 on the same machine.
I figured Buster might be too much, but given how perfectly usable the Stretch install is I probably should have installed that. The 720p resolution can be a bit of a pain at times mind you.
