Can access smb share, but cannot view/edit content

#1 Post by obaino »

I've just setup debian 9 stable xfce on my desktop which previously run linuxmint 18.3.

I used to be able to access and view/edit content on a samba share located on my raspberry, from my previous installation but now I seem to be missing something.

I can browse my samba share from my desktop, but I cannot stream a movie, or open a file to edit.
For example, when I open a text file, it opens empty on my editor.
When I try to open an libreoffice file, nothing happens.
When I want to watch a movie on vlc I get an error

It's strange that I can view a pdf file using evince or a photo using ristretto (although I cannot view the photo using gpicview).

I have gvfs-backends and gvfs-bin installed.

var/log/syslog outputs persistently:
gvfsd mkdir failed on directory /var/cache/samba: Permission denied

Thanks for any help!

having installed cifs-utils seems to have eliminated the above output.
Still though the issue of not being able to edit files or stream persists...

to follow up on this rather solitary thread...

I managed to stream files using vlc by following the suggestion of this link
https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/vlc ... files.html

I also managed to open, edit and save libreoffice documents by installing the libreoffice-common package. (I forgot to mention I'm using xfce)

I can still not edit txt files. although I open a txt file, its contents it looks empty.

Two Linux boxes and Samba? What happened to NFS, the Unix way to share files over network.

You are right.
When I looked for file sharing I kept coming accross samba file sharing so this is why.
I will try to set up sharing using nfs when I can...

Thanks for your reply
