can I reset gnome shell 3.4? themes are not working

#1 Post by persio »

Some months ago, when I installed Wheezy, I wanted to get back the minimize/restore/close buttons on the top panel so I followed some instructions to do so. Now I have them and they are working fine, but I don't know why doing that broke gnome's ability to change shell themes and even to change GTK themes. I'm stuck on (I think) adawaita and I can't change anything. My windows look like this one:

I would really like to be able to use shell themes and gtk themes again. I know I've messed with settings but I don't know exactly which one, I was a bit sloppy when I changed that stuff. Is there any safe way to restore gnome to it's original settings without affecting everything else? (docs, etc.)

I really don't know what information you would find useful, so please ask if there's any. I'm runing debian wheezy 7.1 with gnome shell 3.4.2 using nouveau drivers.

This problem is not Debian specific. Google says:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/56313/ho ... e-defaults
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126060
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- ... files.html

I can't vouch for the accuracy of any of that, but "deleting" the file(s) where Gnome stores its settings should do the trick. I would rather rename the files instead of deleting them, which does the same thing since Gnome won't find it, so that if it doesn't work I could easily restore.

Alternatively, you could try a purge of the the package gnome-tweak-tool with apt-get, then install it again, might be worth a shot.

This worked for me.
(I've has a pretty ugly desktop for a couple of months now)

purged gnome-tweak-tool with apt-get
(not sure that this step is required)

Moved my dconf file with
mv .config/dconf/user .config/dconf/user.bak

My gnome desktop is now back to it's default theme settings
Cool no more black fonts on dark grey backgrounds :)
