[Solved] Can't figure out why executable won't execute

Postby Breaking Jessie » 2013-10-26 20:56

I'm using 64-bit Testing with KDE. The executable is "snes9x-gtk" downloaded from "http://snes9x.ipherswipsite.com/" (the Linux 64-bit version, originates from a tar.bz2 file).
I'm using this program because it was recommended by Barcelona_DEB as working in 64-bit Debian (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=60998)
"snes9x-gtk" file permissions are currently -rwxrwxrwx (I used chmod 777 after being unable to execute the file, but the original unmodified file was marked as executable too).
Double-clicking the file from Dolphin does nothing. Typing "snes9x-gtk" in terminal from the file's folder location returns "bash: snes9x-gtk: command not found". Tried it as normal user and super user. I'm sure I'm spelling the filename right and am in the right folder location.

Anyone know why this program is not executing? It's pretty frustrating.

If you are in the same directory as the executable, then you have to type ./snes9x-gtk

Bash only runs executables that are in $PATH, unless you specify the full path. You can either give the fully-qualified path to the executable, or if it's in the current directory, you can use ./ before the filename to instruct bash to use the current directory. Or you can move the file to /usr/bin, or another directory that is in the path.

Add solved to the title if your problem is fixed. Helps people not read problems that don't need further input, as well as people looking for solutions to similar problems.
