advice against compiling and external deb packages?
advice against compiling and external deb packages?
On https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian it says, you are adviced against compiling sofware on debian and installing deb packages from non debian repositories. Is it correct, that it is only a problem if you upgrade from fx debian 7 to 8? Updating debian will not break debian? Thanks.

Re: advice against compiling and external deb packages?
It is an inadvisable practice in general. In my own case, I somehow broke (permanently, it seems) the hplip printing package on my machine by
obtaining and compiling a later version directly from hplipopensource.com. It sort of worked for a brief period, but later failed, and I could not
undo the changes and reinstall the Debian-supplied package so that it actually functioned. All that because of a perceived minor flaw in my original
hplip software.

It shouldn't, if you follow the upgrade procedure properly.Updating debian will not break debian?
Outside repos can be safe, if the packager has made an effort to make them compatible with a target Debian release. However, too many people add repos at random where that effort has not been made, especially Ubuntu and Ubuntu PPA repos. Also, even if the package has been properly backported, it may cause trouble during an upgrade to a new release--best to remove those before attempting the upgrade.

You may say, that breaking debian 8 due to non repository packets or compiling is not more or less likely, than on ubuntu? About ubuntu errors have been reported when upgrading version, not so much about updating in general.
Breaking debian is also a matter of what non repository software you install. Fx virtualbox know what they are doing and having it installed should not course errors when updating debian?
