Software Updates Failed Debian jessie

#1 Post by J.Val »

When I reboot and log into my account ( I am the only user ) I get the following message at the bottom of the screen.

Software Updates Failed An important OS update failed to be inst...

Details of this message read:

Package Mgr Error

The offline update failed in an unexpected way.
Detailed errors from the package manager follow:

Cannot download packages whilst offline

It is always the same message and it never says what it was trying to install. I have run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. The only error I ever see is:
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Any sugestions?
Thanks,
-Val

As in the umpteen other threads of this sort, the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list and the complete output of apt-get update are the key.

That kind of errors usually are resolved after a few days. Your installation most probably is not the cause of the error but the mirror.

The worst infection of all, is a false sense of security!
It is hard to get away from CLI tools.

If you insert a slash /after "debian" so the line looks like this?

Code: Select all

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
solved.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

#deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

Uncomment, and use that instead of the httpredir server.

Type http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ (don't forget the trailing slash) into your browser and hit enter. Note the actual address of the mirror. Then set up your sources for a mirror that is not that mirror.

If everything now works fine, the problem is most likely the mirror. If that's the case, you can inform mirrors@debian.org.

If you or anyone else has this problem I solved it following this tutorial:

The issue was solved by putting managed=true in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf so that NetworkManager also handles that interface:

$ cat /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=true

After that Software Update works as expected.
