AMD Radeon rx480 video card driver

#1 Post by 33Nicolas »

Hi, hope this is the right place to post this question.

I'm running Antix and want to install the AMD Radeon rx480 video card, but the only driver provided from AMD is for Ubuntu.

Has anyone successfully installed an RX480 in 2017? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

uh, probably not, but have you tried a debian stretch install?

The Linux drivers for this exists as metapackages for both Ubuntu and Redhat.

Though the .debs are not created by Ubuntu, its possible that they may default to different directories.

Personally, I would dearchive the RPMs from redhat and run alien on them. It should be able to sort out any major problems, and possibly reset the paths to the correct ones.

From experience I have had problems with with Ubuntu .debs *not clearly labelled as such* from independant (non repo) sources.
If an RPM is not going to work, alien is pretty much smart enough to tell you.

I believe the card will also be supported by the open xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu driver in Stretch, and it will probably need firmware-amd-graphics to work correctly. The Pro version from AMD is supposed to have more magic in it, though. There is a possiblity that drivers could be backported to a Jessie base on top of the other Mesa backports in jessie-backports. AntiX 17 will be based on Stretch, but it's only a rough alpha release at the moment.
