Hello all,
Just read the following article about IceCat's new release.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... 2-Released
I know Debian has switched to Firefox after so long using IceCat or IceWeasel (not sure of the differences) but from what I read about IceCat - it sounds like a good thing to keep your privacy and what not.
IceCat is completely free and would qualify to be in the main repo but it's not there. Why doesn't Debian have IceCat for people who want to use that browser?
thanks

Re: IceCat
This question has been asked before, and is answered here:

Of course if you or some one else wanted to package it and maintain it, etc,...
I suppose that is possible.
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/dist ... e-deb.html
You could also ask them, at: https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/
Why they don't package it, and add it to the Debian repositories,...
My guess is, they prefer to make it available to all linux users, regardless of the
distro they use,

You aren't missing anything. Nobody has packaged icecat or gnuzilla for Debian and therefore it isn't in the officialy repositories.

Official releases of IceCat are available from ftp.gnu.org, or any GNU mirror. Please use a mirror if possible. Besides the sources, binary releases for GNU/Linux (32 and 64 bit) are available.
IceCat is generated from Firefox with the scripts available at http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git.

Re: IceCat
You can just as easily download and install the binary and run from your /home .....

Re: IceCat
Thank you to both GarryRicketson and HuangLao for your replies.
I tried Icecat in my own home directory and it works very well. One just has to check to see if there's a new version of the program, download it and replace the old with the new.
Cheers!

Re: IceCat
I'm trying to build some packages on the OBS: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... Cat/icecat
Let's see what happens...though I have read that Icecat doesn't add any privacy features that can't be enabled in Firefox by a user in a few minutes.

Re: IceCat
For what it's worth, I did manage to build Icecat packages from source (340 MB source tarball!) on the OBS, and just upgraded them to 52.3.
