HP services problems
HP services problems
I switched from Windows 7 Ultimate to Debian 8. I realized that installing software is more complicated than on Windows 7. I couldn't install even one program on Debian. I must install the HP Services as quick as possible because I have to print some documents. I've tried every version I found on the Internet and it didn't work. Can anybody please help me ? PLEASE ??
Re: HP services problems
What printer have you got and how is it connected to your computer?

Re: HP services problems
This may vary, depending on the model of the printer,...
I have a HP printer, and this package:
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/hplip
was all I needed.
installing packages on Debian is not very complicated:
or where "hplip" is, , any package name.

This is not good,

It is not good practice to be installing "just anything", "every version on the internet", or from random websites,

I don't know about that, I never have used windows,... butI realized that installing software is more complicated than on Windows 7.

There also are several threads on the forum ,about installing the HPLIP package, and getting a HP printer working,..Installing software from places other than official Debian repositories might not get security updates.

Re: HP services problems
If you have a newer printer (which is why phenest asked what model you had), the older hplip in the main Jessie repository may not support it. However, jessie-backports (see backports.org) has the current hplip release.
If you tell us how you're trying to install any programs, we can point out just what's going wrong. Also, I have to reiterate the point that Debian is not a distro for absolute newcomers to Linux; it's more for intermediate users. There are Debian derivative distros that make much more of an effort to be a turnkey solution-- a couple examples are MX 16, Bunsen Labs, or SolydXK. Further diverged from the Debian mothership are the popular Ubuntu and Mint distributions.

Re: HP services problems
Thank you all for the answers !
I've used the HPLIP from hplipopensource.com, and followed all the instructions ,I also began to learn the specific debian programming , but although following the whole instruction, it didn't work ... I have a HP Photosmart 7520. I will try other methods to see if they work.
Thanks !

Re: HP services problems
It's better to use the hplip packages from the Debian repositories in any situation that I can think of, since they are tweaked to work better. This page says your printer is fully supported by the hplip in Jessie: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html
So, have you tried installing hplip with Synaptic or with apt on the command line?

Re: HP services problems
Many printers also require that you use the tools provided to download a non-free ppd file to get it working. I don't really know how that works, but any web search or another user here should be able to walk you through it.

Re: HP services problems
Open a terminal, and try :
That should start a GUI , it is basically self explaining.
It has been so long now, I don't remember exactly, but it seems to me
I remember it telling me I needed to download another driver or something,
and I gave it permission to do so, ..
Also, sometimes the printer needs to be turned off, and the turned on again,
then the computer detects it,..
Code: Select all
hp-setup

Re: HP services problems
I always install:
Code: Select all
apt-get install system-config-printer hpijs-ppds

Re: HP services problems
Thanks, I've done everything you said, but it says : error : No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality...

What program are you referring to?Draius wrote:but it says
Try to be more explicit in describing what you're doing that lead to the error. Start with what program you're using, and then what you clicked on, etc. That way, we can try to reproduce what you're doing and help guide you.
If you've installed hpijs-ppds, then that has your printer listed. Did you install hplip or system-config-printer? If you installed the latter, then also install, cups-pk-helper and printer-driver-hpijs. You shouldn't need much more than that to make the printer work.
Is it connected via USB?

Re: HP services problems
No, it's connected wirelessly. I think the problem could be that the hp-setup requires a GUI support :
I reinstalled it a couple of times, but the message is still showing up.
I then typed hp-setup -i, and this message showed up :
Code: Select all
error: HPLIP is not installed properly or is installed without graphical support. Please reinstall HPLIP
warning: Qt/PyQt 4 initialization failed.
error: hp-setup requires GUI support (try running with --qt3). Also, try using interactive (-i) mode.
I then typed hp-setup -i, and this message showed up :
Code: Select all
--------------------------------
| SELECT CONNECTION (I/O) TYPE |

Num Connection Description

2 par Parallel Port (LPT:)

error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.
Re: HP services problems
How are you installing this? Synaptic or command line via apt-get or dpkg?

Re: HP services problems
Instead of hplip, install this instead:
... and use the program 'Print Settings'.
And if you can't get the printer to work wirelessly, connect it via a USB cable for now. Once the printer is working, the wireless part can be dealt with separately.
Code: Select all
apt-get install hpijs-ppds printer-driver-hpijs cups-pk-helper system-config-printer
