Driver installation: RTL8814AU
Hello,
I bought a wireless usb adapter with the rtl8814 chipset. I tried to install the driver for it on ubuntu 17.04, then somehow my ubuntu stopped booting and kind of vanished from my ssd and I've been searching a lot to install the driver. So I installed Debian Stretch because I actually wanted Debian on this PC and not Ubuntu and now I have the same problem.. It doesn't matter which method I've been using it still doesn't work. I found this interesting conversation https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl8812AU/issues/10 which lead me to discover this https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl88 ... ver-4.3.21 and could it be that Stretch has an 4.9 or 4.10 Kernel? So should I buy an other wireless usb adapter? If yes, which one would you recommend? If no, what should I do.. beg mr. diederikdehaas to make it work for 4.9/4.10 (or whatever Stretch is using).

You need to be more specific on what you did and the actual results.unpluggedtoaster wrote:Hello, I bought a wireless usb adapter with the rtl8814 chipset. I tried to install the driver for it on ubuntu 17.04, then somehow my ubuntu stopped booting and kind of vanished from my ssd
From the commit history https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl88 ... ver-4.3.21 it seems that at least some work had been done to make this driver build on newer Linux versions.unpluggedtoaster wrote:could it be that Stretch has an 4.9 or 4.10 Kernel? beg mr. diederikdehaas to make it work for 4.9/4.10 (or whatever Stretch is using).
The best way to save a lot of hassle is to buy an older but proven dongle. e.g. AR9271-based. Even with those 'proven' chipsets, don't expect USB wireless on Linux to be a 100% smooth expierence though.unpluggedtoaster wrote:So should I buy an other wireless usb adapter?

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
I'd also try and figure out if Ubuntu "kind of vanishing" from your SSD was related to the driver or what you did to try and build it. That's something that Debian users don't really expect to happen out of the blue. Sometimes a Windows or UEFI update can look like it did the same thing, at least on my laptop.

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
I don't remember everything but I downloaded a driver, went into the folder using the terminal and used the "make" and "make install" commands. I rebooted the PC with the adapter plugged in and there was no connection, so I tried to remove the driver but it didn't found it, so I looked for another way to remove it but I haven't found one. I think that this part is going to be stupid: I moved on and did the same thing again but with another driver that I have found.orythem27 wrote:You need to be more specific on what you did and the actual results.unpluggedtoaster wrote:Hello, I bought a wireless usb adapter with the rtl8814 chipset. I tried this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/884591/ ... w-to-linux, but the github-answer didn't work for me because it asked me for a username and a password. I mean I can understand why Ubuntu said "f*ck you" to me..
So should I contact him and pay him?orythem27 wrote:From the commit history https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl88 ... ver-4.3.21 it seems that at least some work had been done to make this driver build on newer Linux versions.unpluggedtoaster wrote:could it be that Stretch has an 4.9 or 4.10 Kernel? beg mr. diederikdehaas to make it work for 4.9/4.10 (or whatever Stretch is using).

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
After installing the driver, you still need to go into system settings and configure wlan0, the wireless connection which needs the driver.I don't remember everything but I downloaded a driver, went into the folder using the terminal and used the "make" and "make install" commands. I rebooted the PC with the adapter plugged in and there was no connection

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
Did the driver actually build for you? I know it looks like a lot of alien technobabble spews out after you issue the "make" command, but very often we have beginners swear up and down a terminal command succeeded, when actually reading the end of the technobabble shows that it failed with an obvious error message.

You didn't say what actual device you have, but you could take a look at this page to see if it will point you in the right direction, just scroll down the page and select your device (if it is listed) and it will give you more information and possibly the correct driver.

I googled and found some "how-to"s but the device never show up with "lsusb" so will it do after the configuration?bigrigdriver wrote:After installing the driver, you still need to go into system settings and configure wlan0, the wireless connection which needs the driver.
Yes, there weren't any error-messages during "make" or "make install"stevepusser wrote:Did the driver actually build for you? I've found my device on this list. It's the TP-Link Archer T9UH and i looked at the drivers available and the one from tp-link is for the 3.13.9 kernel and the one from Edimax is for the 3.16 ~ 4.4 kernel. So is there any point in trying to install the driver from Edimax?Dai_trying wrote:You didn't say what actual device you have [...] it will give you more information and possibly the correct driver.

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
Hmm...with that driver installed, if you run "dmesg" in the terminal (requires sysadmin rights on Stretch kernel), does anything appear about the device after you plug it in and run the command again?

Code: Select all
apt-get install linux-headers-4.9.0-3-amd64
Code: Select all
apt-get install linux-headers-4.9.0-3-common
I used this driver. It was the one closest to the 4.9 kernel.

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
When I tried to get my Edimax wifi working, the driver supplied by Edimax was broken. It compiled without errors, but failed to make a connection to the device. I found a link to an updated driver from github for the rtl8812au/rtl8821au. It can also be compiled for the rtl8814au, by the command "make RTL8814=1"
github download: git clone https://github.com/scrivy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git
Then "cd rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux"
Run the make command given above: make RTL8814=1
Followed by:
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8814au
github download: git clone https://github.com/scrivy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git
Then "cd rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux"
Run the make command given above: make RTL8814=1
Followed by:
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8814au

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
My preferred method of setting up the running kernel's driver build environment is to install module-assistant and run
as root or with sudo. That handles everything automatically, and it's short enough for me to remember easily.

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
With the wi-fi plugged in, try running modprobe to load the driver and probe the device.
Then run "sudo tail /var/log/messages" to see what messages are logged.
Reboot should not be necessary.

Re: Driver installation: RTL8814AU
I tried "apt-get install network-manager-gnome" but it's already installed. However, I can't find it anywhere. So I tried it using the terminal. Using "ip a" I get:bigrigdriver wrote:https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse
