See the Debian wiki article.
https://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx

Or, if you don't have internet access, see the Ubuntu wiki article.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... net_access

Should you encounter any problem, post with the exact detail. e.g. Which step did it fail, the exact message indicating failure, etc.

I typed "leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list"
Then I added "http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free"

it did everything its expose to do until the end

"Setting up b43-fwcutter (1:015-14.1) ..."
"Setting up firmware-b43-installer (1:015-14.1)"
"No chroot environment found. Starting normal installation"
"Unsupported device(s) found: PCI id 14e4:4727"
"Aborting"

1. Add a "contrib" component to /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:

Code: Select all

# Debian 7 "Wheezy"
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free
Is the OP really running Debian Wheezy ? They should have told us
what version of Debian the are actually using in the first post, but didn't.

I typed "leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list"
Then I added "http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free"
That would be fine if you are using Debian 7 , wheezy , as shown in
the EXAMPLE, it is a example only, if some one is using Debian 8 they
would need to make the appropriate change.
(most people are using Debian 8, so that is why I am wondering)

I went ahead and read the Debian wiki entry. For 4313 devices, it says to install the firmware-brcm80211 package: https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/firmware-brcm80211

Though I'm just hoping that this works with the rev. 1 version. I seem to remember that it does.

What version of Debian are you actually using ?
And I think it would be a good idea to show us your /etc/apt/sources.list
file, the complete file. Please use the "code boxes".

Oh, I'm sorry. Forgot that b43 does not support BCM4313 so it was nonsensical to provice those wiki links.

As for the 404 error, I remember seeing something earlier this year that the 'httpredir' service had been dropped. So maybe change to another mirror?

If for whatever reason you cannot fix the apt update error for the moment, you might as well download the package @stevepusser suggested and install manually. Wouldn't need any extra dependency.

Ok, thanks, you should take a look at this :
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList

There is some good examples of what the sources.list file should contain.

I am sorry, I am not able to explain very well on the sources.list file,
but the examples in the wiki are good,...

Before you do anything more, it would be a good idea to wait,
and check back here later, hope fully some one that can explain
better , will do so.
In the mean time, read what it says in the wiki, on the sources.list,
and look at the examples,..
There also is this :
https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/apt/ ... .5.en.html

I am assuming you have Debian installed, and it is working , except
for the firmware and wireless card ?
Do you have a internet connection, besides Wifi, that works ?

Hello, davidbnd,

Please take a careful look at the forum thread below, and I think following those instructions should get your WiFi up and running. I have that same card in my old netbook; the driver and firmware you want to install is the "brcm80211" (as mentioned previously by stevepusser):

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=127718
"BCM4313 802.11bgn doesn't work in Jessie." 27 Mar. 2016.

I'll post my sources.list file (found at /etc/apt/sources.list) shortly, as soon as I get the netbook fired up. OK ... here is a copy of mine, for the sake of comparison:

Code: Select all

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8 _Jessie_ - Official Snapshot i386 LIVE/INSTALL Bin$
# 20150606-16:25]/ jessie main

deb http://ftp.utexas.edu/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.utexas.edu/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
Here is the point version of Jessie I'm running:

Code: Select all

david@tlacuache:~$ cat /etc/debian_version
8.8
HTH and Good luck. :)

< Edit:

If your problem updating is related to a mirror issue, you might try this idea. If you can't update your system at all because of the "Not Found" error, first change your sources.list back to the "default" / stock setting as shown here:

https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
Update your system.

If that is successful, next install the handy "netselect-apt" utility and run it. It will help identify your fastest Debian mirror. If you haven't ever installed netselect-apt, here is a brief description of it:

http://www.debianadmin.com/select-faste ... t-apt.html
"Select fastest Debian mirror using netselect-apt." 11 Dec. 2013. >

As far as I know, the "httpredir" service is still available, but it can't hurt to try another mirror,...

I am a little confused, by what stevepusser says here:
stevepusser wrote:I went ahead and read the Debian wiki entry. For 4313 devices, it says to install the firmware-brcm80211 package: https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/firmware-brcm80211

Does this apply to Debian Jessie as well ?
There seems to be the same package available for Jessie:
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/firmware-brcm80211
=== for the down load===
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/all/ ... 1/download
But pay attention to what it says:

If you are running Debian, it is strongly suggested to use a package manager like aptitude or synaptic to download and install packages, instead of doing so manually via this website.

You should be able to use any of the listed mirrors by adding a line to your /etc/apt/sources.list like this:

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian jessie main non-free

Replacing ftp.de.debian.org/debian with the mirror in question.
The same is said about the package for Debian wheezy:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/all/ ... 1/download

Steve needs to clarify on this, I do not think a Debian Wheezy package
should be installed on Debian Jessie,...
@ OP, I think you should wait on installing this until steve clarafies this,
he know much more about this then I do.

I believe that Garry is correct. It has been a while since I installed the necessary packages on my netbook (so my memory is fuzzy), but I think you must reboot after Step #3 (the "modprobe" command) for the change to take effect.

Then, proceed to Step # 4 for configuring the interface: https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

If that doesn't get the WiFi working, please describe in more detail exactly what you've done so far, and also post the output of the command below. (Note: you will need to become the root user before typing the command).

I'm posting the output from my system to give you an approximate idea of what you might see:

Code: Select all

root@tlacuache:~# iwconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"Deimos97"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 20:4E:7F:96:1E:68
          Bit Rate=65 Mb/s Tx-Power=30 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=68/70 Signal level=-42 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:119 Missed beacon:0

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.
Also, please tell us which Desktop Environment you are using: Gnome? KDE? MATE? Xfce? LXDE? (That information will let people know which Network Manager utility you are trying to configure).

I will do my best to continue helping you, but I'm not a WiFi guru, so if more advanced troubleshooting is needed I will step aside. However, there are lots of knowledgeable people here and I'm sure that someone will chime in with good ideas / suggestions on how to get things sorted out.

I think stevepusser or any potential helper may need to see the output of the following to determine whether correct drivers are loading :

Code: Select all

lsmod | egrep 'wl|b43|brcm|ssb'
dmesg | egrep 'wl|b43|brcm|ssb|firmware'
Additionally, probably these too -

Code: Select all

rfkill list all
iwconfig
The first command will be available only if you have 'rfkill' package installed, and both may need to be run as root.

According to the wiki, that device should be using the kernel's brcmsmac driver. if you run as sysadmin

Code: Select all

modinfo brcmsmac
it will tell you some information about your kernel's version, including what files it expects for firmware and where it would like to find them in /lib/firmware. Then you can check to see if the firmware files are actually there.
