Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
That would probably be best.
But if you want to continue for fun:
google no longer provides a 32bit chrome - remove that source.
Then do another 'apt update' followed by an 'apt full-upgrade'

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
I've changed it to be just that and, as you guessed, it still does not update....
Any further ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
I have a little utility I've used on a windows machine called iso2usb.....generally works fine to burn isos to a usb stick....btw, my pc is a little 32-bit eee pc netbook...
arochester wrote:You CAN install Debian from a USB flash drive.
You need to find out if your computer is 32bit or 64bit to download the correct IS0.
The use of Netbootin to write the ISO is NOT advised.
Look at something, like, Etcher instead.
Alternatively you can write the ISO to the USB flash drive using the dd command https://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#write-usb

If you have any stuff in Home you want to save take it off first with an external Hard Drive/or USB stick...

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
Code: Select all
apt update
There are some 32-bit chromium-derived browsers still out there; Slimjet is one that springs to mind. They don't maintain a repo though, so you'll have to download and install their deb if you want to use it.

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
fyi - the multiple sources issue predates me back to the pc's prior owner...I'm just picking up the pieces from a poor installation that apparently went south enough to where the owner sold it for $40 on ebay....
is there a barebones sources.list I should revert to or should I just pare this one down somehow?

GarryRicketson wrote:I don't think that has much or anything to do with it,
your sources.list file does, though.
Does not have anything to do with why your /apt/etc/sources.list... without any cd dock or anything
includes , squeeze , stable, and jessie, This is something you have done, ???
And now nothing works.

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
If I obtained a second hand machine the first thing I would do is to format the drive(s) and start over with a clean install. One never knows what a previous owner has left on there. There could be a security problem. Just saying.

What arochester showed you, is "bare bones", and also there is a good example here:arochester wrote:Change it to thisTry to update. It may not...Code: Select all
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free deb http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList
and..I'm just picking up the pieces from a poor installation that apparently went south enough to where the owner sold it for $40 on ebay....
I am sorry, I completely "missed" the significance of what was said here, I had seen the sources you had listed, and it did not "register" in my mind,.... but like every one else is saying, you really should just install a new system, that is whatPostby ayarrington73 » 2017-07-09 13:52
I remember, for example, it arrived from ebay being unable to browse the wireless/internet.....through some troubleshooting, I found that it had 2 gateways defined, so it was trying to use the ethernet(not connected) as a gateway......Not a horribly difficult fix, but a pain nonetheless.....guess that's why it was only $40
I do on all my computers when I buy them, they are all second hand.
Another alternative to using a usb stick to install, get a usb external optical drive, that is what I use on laptops that don't have a optical drive. Then you can burn a image to a CD and install with CD.

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
Man, the owner must have been some random Chinese guy who wanted to spread (non)Petya virus if it was that cheapwhere the owner sold it for $40 on ebay
You got an netbook for basicaly free, good for you. If I were you, I would just reinstall. You didn't put anything naughty in there that you want back, did you?
Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
What's the betting that OP will come back asking how to properly update and posting another output? I'm sure all this time posting [and times between postings] could have been better put towards a reinstall.Wheelerof4te wrote: You got an netbook for basicaly free, good for you. You didn't actually expect anyone to take that sucker bet, did you?Lysander wrote:What's the betting that OP will come back asking how to properly update and posting another output?
You badly underestimate the depth of the OP's "Technological Münchausen Syndrome." In the interval between the first suggestion to reinstall and the last post where he was known not have NOT reinstalled, elapsed time is roughly four days (as of this posting). He could have easily done over 100 fresh installs. (Not hyperbole; do the math.)Lysander wrote: I'm sure all this time posting [and times between postings] could have been better put towards a reinstall.
He's opened two identical threads on the exact same topic, though he blamed his "disability" for his mysterious failure to provide a dump of his sources.list in the second thread.
After GarryR, arochester, and Wheelerof4te had all affirmed that Debian can inded be installed from a USB stick, the only response from the OP was to post Yet Another Version of his sources.list.
After four days of deliberate inactivity, there can be no doubt. His conduct is willful and obstinate. It is not accidental, and it is not because he's "disabled."
I hate to say "I told you so," but I told you so.
The only thing worse than a help vampire is someone who posts a "problem" simply because he's bored. He's no different in that sense from any other troll.
It would be poetic justice if every person who tried to help him in either thread clicked the obligatory time-saver link

Re: Debian won't update - package updater error
can you think of any more acid to spew about my character or lack thereof in your eyes....sheesh! If that's the kind of "help" I'm gonna get for an honest question from a disabled i.t. veteran who is honestly trying to make do on a limited budget, forget it....I'll look elsewhere. No wonder i.t. guys have such a poor reputation these days....
