Patchy display

#1 Post by ChrisAlan »

Hello all,

I've just installed debian on an old Dell Dimension 4600, for fun, and all is well except the screen. What's displayed is super patchy. For example, "Time" might be displayed as " me."

It's just the desktop. When I open an application, everything displays fine.

Any idea what might be causing This?

Here's what it looks like, if it helps:

for fear of stating the obvious, this looks a lot like a graphic driver problem to me.
please post the output of

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -A5 VGA
edit:
the default gnome desktop might not be a good choice for this ancient hardware.
lighter weighter is the way.

That did it! I'm using a lightweight desktop now, and with no problems. Thanks!
