#1 Post by filipsid »

Hi,
I want to install vbox guest additions on vm debian sid in virtualbox (5.1.26).
It says: failed to setup service vboxadd.
I try to install linux headers for my kernel: 4.11.0-2-amd64 but no success.
Please help,

Sid is Debian's unstable development branch. It is not suitable for beginners.

If you are to be using Debian at all, you'll be better off running Stable.

Of course you encountered problems! Sid breaks because that's what it's supposed to do. Is it clear even to you now why it's not suitable for beginners???

(Muttering a long list of deeply offensive obscenities)

I kindly urge the OP to read the first link in my signature for more information on why unstable is indeed called unstable.

Look, I will even link directly to save him the kinetic energy required to move his mouse several pixels further towards the Earth's mantle.

So, is it impossible to install at all ? Or is it impossible to install for a beginner ?

It could be any number of things, as suggested , if you are not advanced enough to know
how to check bug reports, package status, and other things, "SID" is not a good choice
for you.
You don't seem to even know enough to post some specific details as to error messages , etc.
IE:
.I met some problems on sid.
Use some logic, How on earth can anyone
even start to try to answer this when you do not even say exactly what the problems were ?????
Same here:
I try to install linux headers for my kernel: 4.11.0-2-amd64 but no success.
Really, How did you try to install these linux headers ? What command, ?
what were the error messages , when you tried installing it ? ...............

When the beginner does not take the time to read anything, and do research, YES it is
impossible. Forget it.
So, is it impossible to install at all ?
It might be possible, but it would take some research, and I do not have the desire, or interest to do that for you.
The packages might not be available in the 'sid' repositories, or they might be partially
"broken", Sid is "Stiil In Developement", this means some of the packages and even kernal headers, are not complete, nor ready to use,... please, Do your own research on this.
Thank you

Clearly impossible for you.

At this point, I find myself wondering if you're trolling or just not smart enough to understand the word "unstable"

Yes, yet at present it is impossible for me, but I will read your all kind replies and links with documentaries.
Once again thank you for advice.

Hi,
So SID=unstable, Stretch=stable, middle way is Buster=testing.
VBoxLinuxAdditions does work on Buster.

NO. Testing is not a "middle ground" between Stable and Unstable.

Like Unstable, Testing is not suitable for beginners.

Read the posting Lysander already linked to.
