[SOLVED] Gigabyte GA-AB350M - Ryzen compatibility issue

#1 Post by JABF779 »

I am actually a Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon user, but I thought that Debian might hold a solution to my problem. Last night I installed a new GIGABYTE GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 motherboard and a Ryzen-3 CPU. When I tried to boot my USB to install Linux Mint 18.2, I received the error: "unexpected irq trap at vector 07" and Mint wouldn't even live boot from the USB. There's nothing wrong with the USB, it boots fine on my other machines. It's just an issue with this new Ryzen Gigabyte board and Mint 18.2.

I posted this on the Mint forum and found that this is a common problem others are experiencing with Mint and this Ryzen motherboard and CPU. The latest Mint doesn't work with this MB/CPU.

I really don't want to run Windows on this machine, so I thought I'd see if perhaps Debian might work... so, I'm here asking if anyone has successfully installed Debian on this MB/CPU combo. Thanks in advance (even if it's a tale of woe for Debian too).

You will need kernel 4.11 for Ryzen support. Debian Stable ships with 4.9 only. Your only choice are rolling release distros such as OpenSUSe Tumbleweed, Fedora, some Arch derivative (Manjaro or Antergos, Arch is too hard to install). You could try Debian 9 with backports kernel, read about backports here:
https://backports.debian.org/

But since you have no experience with Debian, these will likely work OTB:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumble ... stallation
https://getfedora.org/
https://manjaro.org/

Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

I have a Rizen Processor and a B350 motherboard and I am running Debian 9 for more then a month with close to no issue.

With that said I am wondering if its safe for the system stability but I will open my own thread hehe.
