Spotify launcher

#1 Post by Deblib »

Hello, I have installed spotify-client in Debian 9 following this tutorial: https://www.comoinstalarlinux.com/insta ... 9-stretch/ At first the launcher appeared but it has disappeared and I have to start it by terminal. How can I solve that? Thank you.

Spotify is the one thing that has given me more trouble than anything else to install in Debian. Having said that, I've done it enough times now to know how to do it.

The Debian Wiki is the most useful resources on this issue [on 99% of issues]. You should always check there before going to another site.

Here:

https://wiki.debian.org/spotify

The issue you are having sounds like the exact same issue I had in Jessie which could only be solved through Flatpak. However, you are using Stretch and it's a lot easier to make Spotify work on Stretch. I would purge your install and start again using the Debian wiki.

I have listened to spotify using the addon to mopidy, an mpd-like music program that is in the official Debian repository and never had any problems.

I used the Debian wiki (after purging the previous installation) and after several days the problem reappeared: no icon in the Gnome classic launcher.

Code: Select all

$ spotify
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
[0910/161539:ERROR:main_delegate.cc(752)] Could not load cef_extensions.pak
[0910/161539:ERROR:main_delegate.cc(752)] Could not load cef_extensions.pak

I have reinstalled Debian and followed the Debian wiki instructions to install Spotify and the icon does not appear in the Gnome classic launcher. :(

I don't know about that issue but the Wiki is currently giving the wrong keyserver.

It gives

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://pool.sks-keyservers.net --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886
when it should be

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 0DF731E45CE24F27EEEB1450EFDC8610341D9410

I remember having exactly this issue in Jessie. I can't say I've had the same in Stretch at all. As to why I didn't remember this from your OP, I can't say.

What I did to solve it in Jessie was use the flatpak version instead. Of course you'll have to uninstall your current version.

From what I recall it can take a few mins to install, so if the terminal looks like it's hanging it's probably not, just leave it to do its thing.

I have installed flatpak and Spotify but I don't know how to install the Spotify launcher in Gnome classic Multimedia menu.

After installing flatpak and Spotify, I got the Spotify launcher in Multimedia. I hope it lasts!

It hasn't been mentioned in this thread so far and I know it's not the same thing than using Spotify application, but...

Spotify recently changed their web player to support HTML5 and it works pretty well. At least with Firefox 52.5.0 ESR. :) If you only want to get the sound out of your speakers, that's one option.
