Pepper Flash Player installation problem

#1 Post by acukcroy »

Hi, I am trying to install the Pepper Flash Player as per instructions from:

https://wiki.debian.org/PepperFlashPlayer/Installing

If I follow them then:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree
I get the error:

Package pepperflashplugin-nonfree is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

My sources.list:

Code: Select all

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 NETINST 20170722-11:28]/ s$
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 NETINST 20170722-11:28]/ st$

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main non-free

# stretch-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main non-free

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
Same with:

Code: Select all

aptitude install pepperflashplugin-nonfree browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash
No candidate version found for pepperflashplugin-nonfree. Unable to apply some actions, aborting

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Change your sources list to include contrib.
See this section of the page you used: wiki.debian.org/PepperFlashPlayer/Installing.

Hi, I have changed my sources - as far as I understand - see the last line in my sources.list

I get the same problem if I change the stable word in that line to stretch

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

There is no pepperflashplugin-nonfree package for Debian stretch:

https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... ection=all

We will probably repackage bunsen-pepperflash for a stretch base soon.

OK, thanks.

The page at https://wiki.debian.org/PepperFlashPlayer/Installing may need to be updated then, as it says:

aptitude install pepperflashplugin-nonfree browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash

Actually, I've just realised that I'm still using the BL-H² version of that package in my Debian stretch systems and it works fine (I had an update popup just the other day):

Or the MX 17 adobe-flashplugin package, which contains both the NPAPI and PPAPI (pepper) plugins, since we have permission from Adobe to redistribute the plugin binaries. But that makes it a lot more of a pain to rebuild those packages with every new Flash release. :?

The wiki is outdated--the procedure and package that's in there broke a long time ago, (though I did hack it enough to get it working again at that time) which is why it's not in Stretch. But I have no idea whether my hacked version is still working:

Thanks everyone - I installed bunsen-pepperflash & common via a .deb.

Seems to work in chrome now :)

Although it's a pain when chrome keeps asking "allow flash on this site".

I'm not sure, seem OP's problem is for chromium?
AFAIK adobe already provide standalone PPAPI Flash Player file for linux.
But you need manually install it.(I'm forgot that how-to but that should is easy thing. I now trying re-googling)
Also see:http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/how-to-m ... layer.html

if you mean chrome, chrome is self-containing PPAPI Flash Player .
I'm sorry for my bad English skills

1. The page you linked is from 2012, and did not work for me (2018 now).
2. chromium for Linux does not come with flash "self-contained".
3. You can download a PPAPI from Adobe - https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ - as either a .tgz or RPM. The instructions for the .tgz (v30.x) say to install "Unpack the plugin tar.gz and copy all the files to /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/", but that does not work for me either (with chromium=63.0.3239.84-1~deb9u1, in stretch).

The bunsen-pepperflash .deb mentioned above is basically a simple script that downloads pepperflash from the above location and configures chromium to find it:
This package will download and unpack the PPAPI flash plugin from Adobe,
and add configuration files for chromium and
browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash.
The end user license agreement is available at Adobe.
This package itself does not contain any software from Adobe.
Still doesn't bloody work with chromium. Works with the FF and `browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash` though,

Have you enabled Flash in the options?

The bunsen-pepperflash package still works for me with Chromium & Debian stable.

Oh. It bloody works now. I thought I enabled it but did it wrong:

If go you to chrome://settings/content/flash (in chromium v38), it give 2 options "Ask first" or "Block site from running flash". I just checked "Ask first" and thought that would be enough, but I also had to add the site as a URL (not just a domain name) in the allowed sites sub-section. Actually a nice feature.

Cheers.
