i'm assuming that before posting this, you searched the web and the millions of existing "no wifi on laptop xyz" threads, and after hours and hours, you still couldn't find anything relevant to your situation...

please post the info requested here:

You know all those fancy commands such as:

Code: Select all

lspci -knn | grep -EiA2 net
but somehow don't know that Debian requires non-free firmware for most wi-fi cards to work? I call that...very suspicious.

You have all that you need here:

Code: Select all

 Kernel modules: iwlwifi

Code: Select all

apt install firmware-iwlwifi

The command i got from the url posted to me.

https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=24

Im new at linux. But trying to lern..

Thnx for your answer, will try and see if that helps..

Edit --

Code: Select all

apt install firmware-iwlwifi
It only tells me that the firmware is already the newest version. And i also made shure that NetoworkManager is the latest. I also noticed this:

Code: Select all

Nov 22 11:04:35 debian gvfsd[1051]: mkdir failed on directory /var/cache/samba: Ã…tkomst nekas

Ã…tkomst nekas <- can be transladed to access denied or somthing simulare. So i guess i have some problem with rights..
Edit again --

I have been adding a non-free repo, i added

Code: Select all

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free

Read this before you try installing firmware:
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList

You will need to add non-free repos. Then reboot after.

Are you sure Debians firmware-iwlwifi supports the 3165 chipset? The driver supports it since kernel 4.1.

No, I was not sure. Guess you have to check, even with these kinds of questions. It seems that it doesn't, according to this:
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/firmware-iwlwifi

If it's so, then OP's only option is to try another distro.

not necessarily.
the firmware can be obtained manually and put into /usr/lib/firmware (i think); the driver should pick it up from there.

Intel is pretty good about putting firmware online at their site.

OP is new to Linux, so it shouldn't matter if he can put firmware files anywhere. He is far better off both stress and time-wise installing some other, noob-friendlier distro.

this statement just doesn't make sense.
He is far better off both stress and time-wise installing some other, noob-friendlier distro.
and so it follows that this statement doesn't make sense either.

but only op can answer that.

who isn't such a newb when you look at their join date.
more likely "pulling the newb card".

it is simply factually wrong to say "OP's only option is to try another distro."

For the record, it is "safe" to use either `dpkg -i` or gdebi to install newer firmware .deb packages from sid because they have no dependencies ;)

Of course the associated kernel driver will also be needed.
