Having trouble installing Debian

#1 Post by djs »

2-3-2018

I am a windows guy trying to install Debian-live-9.3.0-amd64-kde.iso
on the wifes 64-bit uefi computer. I have enough knowledge of linux
to be dangerous.
I got errors on her computer when trying to install Debian.
I tried different dvds and downloaded Debian several times and am still
getting errors on her computer. I used freeisoburner to create the ISO DVD
on my windows computer. On the Debian start up screen, I have tried several
items and they all give errors. I suspect the download is bad but I have no
control over that.
Please I need some guidance. Please keep it simple for me.
I have Ubuntu 17.04 on her computer and I want to get a distro that does not
expire and is simple enough for her to use. We both like Chrome and Gmail.
Firefox and Thunderbird is no no.
If you feel that this distro is to difficult for my wife to use please suggest
others.
Thanks for any help.

Have you tried disabling Secure Boot?

You should share the _exact_ error messages rather than a vague description.

Thank you for responding.
I will check again to make sure Secure boot is disabled.
I will get the error messages you require as soon as I can.

I haven't heard of freeisoburner before. I've heard of people having success with Rufus and Etcher on the Windows side, though. LiveUSB Install may also be worth a try: https://sourceforge.net/projects/liveusbinstall/

If you just want to run Chrome and access Gmail in it, a simple desktop like lxde or xfce would be enough to start with. The standard GNOME desktop or KDE might be overkill. Cinnamon and Mate are sort of in the middle and are a lot like Windows 7 or earlier, before MS started messing with the "it ain't broke" interface.

You may also want to set up unattended upgrades so security updates take place automatically.

Secure Boot is disabled.

I'll try the versions you suggested (lxde and xfce).
That will take a while.....

The version I have now gave the same error message regardless whether I hit f12 or not.
If you don't hit f12 then nothing shows on the screen for about 5 minutes.

Sounds like a defective installation medium (or cable/connector/other hardware problems).

Got Debian to install.
Down loaded Chrome and perused it.
Now I can't find it. I want to get rid of
Firefox and I suppose Thunderbird.
I tried to set the time to a 12 hour setting
and now the screen is totally blank.
Please help.

In the Firefox address line I typed in http://www.Chrome.com. Then I was able to install it.
Typed Gmail in Chrome and her email screen came up.
Signed out and now I can't find Chrome.
As I said before I was playing around with time trying to change it to 12 hour clock
and that deleted the bar at the bottom of the screen. Now I only have a blank screen

The screen is green, the color I made it. With a trash cursor and a pointer and nothing else.
What do you mean be what desktop environment am I on?
Maybe I should just install Debian again????

I suggest you first read a bit of Debian wiki, and maybe watch some Youtube tutorials on installing and configuring Debian first.

Sounds like you just deleted the panel. Search the interwebz for "how to restore lxde panel" or something like that.
