Brand new, need help picking desktop environment

#1 Post by Jakir »

Hi, sorry if this is an extremely basic question but I'm installing debian stretch and I can't figure out which desktop environment I should install. Because of my work schedule I'm most active at night and my eyes get extremely bothered by bright themes so for me it is very important to have a black theme. I originally installed xfce to get a black theme that looks like this: (I would turn off the transparency)

But despite the theme having xfce in the name it wouldn't work on debian stretch running xfce. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me what desktop environment I should run to get a black on black ultra dark minimalist theme and how to install it?

Thanks very much for your time.

XFCE is just fine.
How exactly is it "not working"?
chances are the gtk3 in the theme is outdated.
you just have to try a few different dark themes, it's hit and miss with those community contributions.

if you want to outsource dealing with the abomination called gtk3, you could try oomox.

When I try to run the theme in gdebi it says it isn't made for debian or something along those lines. But I thought the themes were just for desktop environments and those don't appear to be exclusive to debian, ubuntu, ect so I'm not sure why it won't work. And I'm having problems finding other dark themes for any of the desktop environments Debian comes with.

KDE in Stretch comes with the theme Dark Breeze.

Having said that, it is probably easier to find something for XFCE - if you already have it installed.

Isn't there any desktop environment in stretch that can have a black theme?

Both KDE and GNOME have dark themes. You will find KDE's Breeze Dark in settings under themes. On GNOME, look for tweak tool and use that to pick adwaita dark theme.
XFCE does have dark themes, but it's a bit harder to setup.

If you think that is black you need to get your eyes checked because that is some nasty shades of gray...

Everything looks a little gray on this crappy screen. Now, good luck to you, and goodbye.

Yes any/all of them.

What you're really asking though is "Hasn't sombody made a theme exactly like I'm looking for, for exactly the versions I'm running."

Since the "brave new world" of gtk3 breaking everything on each update, there is a lot less people willing to put in the work maintaining themes on an ongoing basis.

The good news is you can do some research and build your own, just as you like.

It is even easier with a Window Manager, instead of a Desktop Environment,
A black background, is not what I would want for my theme,or terminal , but just to demonstrate, I whipped this up, it took about 10 min. For OpenBox, ...

you are asking the wrong questions.
ALL desktop environments can have dark themes.
the one you chose is outdated:
Last changelog: 7 years ago
please re-read my previous post.

what you need is to learn how to use (gtk) themes.
they aren't all click-to-install.
