How change the Desktop Environment

#1 Post by francesco1962 »

Hello,
I have installed Debian 9.4.0 for amd64 from the net, with the netinstall CD. I mistakenly choosed the Standard Desktop Environment, and now I want to change with the KDE ;
What can I do?

Hi,
This was discussed in viewtopic.php?t=110478 but the simplest option is just to reinstall.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

I would suggest to do a reinstall instead of changing it environment now manually.

For a reason...? Debian has apt, and reinstall is seldom a necessity.

Code: Select all

apt purge [gnome*/kde*/xfce*/...]

Code: Select all

apt install [gnome/kde/xfce/...]

^A lot of junk will remain that way. GTK and Qt do not sit well with each other, so it's easier to just reinstall.

I still disagree, apt handles dependecies and also announces which packages are no longer needed. But great thing is, that everyone can do whatever, it is debian.
