installation debian 9.4 there is a problem, can help me?

#1 Post by ritzael »

this i am a new user for debian and i am trying to install debian for IBM Thinkpad R40 laptop. When installing debian, it's no problem, but after installation and then restart, problems start to appear at boot like on the screenshot of this photo link;
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dAZYz ... azO7TJWYQw
the problem is not only that, after going into the debian window, for wifi connection not working, because there are two views for wifi connection, every time I want to connect wifi must always ask for a password, as in the screenshot of this photo link;
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WrnGT ... Wb3X9r65N2
if anyone can help me from the above problem?

These might help you, key words are "How to deal with missing firmware on Debian",...

I guess , just enter the password, depending on the DE you are using , or WM,?
You don't bother to tell us, but some have ways to store passwords and make it automatic. The photo does not really show anything use full, but if you browse the forum a little, you will find 1000's of post, similar, all though they are slightly different situations, hardware, in each one pay attention and note what details are requested, then maybe with enough details someone can help you.

Well, in your first image: Image
Notice , it says

Code: Select all

*ERROR*Failed to load firmware
So it appears you do not have some of the firmware you need installed.
For details: https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware
Devices/Drivers Firmware

Many devices require a firmware to operate. Historically, firmware were built-into the device's ROM or Flash memory, but more and more often, the firmware has to be loaded into the device by the driver during the device initialization.

Some of these firmware are free and open-source, and some of them are non-free, which means that you need to add the non-free and contrib components to /etc/apt/sources.list; see sources.list(5) and Debian archive basics (Debian Reference) for more information.

Firmware during the installation

In some cases the installer detects the need for non-free firmware and prompts the user to make the firmware available to the installer to complete the installation. This can happen, for example, with wireless network cards which often require non-free firmware to function (see ipw2200 for an example).

A suggestion, especially when installing on unfamiliar hardware, is to download the firmware archive for your platform and unpack it into a directory named firmware in the root of a removable storage device (USB/CD drive). When the installer starts, it will automatically find the firmware files in the directory on the removable storage and, if needed, install the firmware for your hardware. You can find firmware downloads for your Debian version at http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unoff ... /firmware/.
I copied / pasted part here for you, but you should read it all.
You still have not given any details, like what image you used to install, what Desktop Environment you are using, (There are some install images available that should include the firmware you need),
Here is 1 of many threads, you will note they ask for the 'lspci' out put, and other information, ... maybe some one will jump in here and give some step by step explanations, but they need some details from you.

You are doing many things incorrectly.
- installing aptitude when you could just use apt
- downloaded firmware for Wheezy when you are running Debian Stretch
- installing all of firmware when you probably only need two
- installing prism2-something when you don't know what it is

Also looking at your screenshots in the first post - the firmware message is for firmware-amd-graphics.
In the second screenshot you have wired connection active which may be preferred by the OS so wifi could be unavailable.

Also, someone mentioned above to post the output from

Code: Select all

lspci
.It helps to work out what device you are trying to find firmware for.

It may be easier to download and install a different distro which has all the firmware included. Probably the best would be MX-17 which is based on Stretch. https://mxlinux.org/
If you really want pure Debian there is an installation image which includes all common firmware but that still may take a bit more setting up than MX. https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... ree/amd64/

Yes it (MX17) can be installed on a i386 system:
https://mxlinux.org/download-links
Current release: MX-17.1

Two different ISOs are available (see installation notes at bottom of page).

MX-17.1_386, containing a 32 bit PAE kernel.
Just be sure that is the one you download, and I am inclined to agree, to start out with as a beginner, it is much more likely to "just work", ....
Note: If you do install it, when it boots, there will be various options as to what to boot with, you will want to use the "with PAE" option,..if it is not clear, don't get discouraged, just try again, but with a different option, 1 of them should work.
I have used the MX images to install on various laptops, when I did not have time or desire to mess with getting the firmware and driver issues worked out.

Hmm, I just looked up the specs of your R40. How much RAM does it have? The one I found had 256MB which would be insufficient to run most modern desktop environments. You may be better off installing a really lightweight distro such as Antix - https://antixlinux.com/ . It is closely related to MX and shares some developers but is more suitable for older computers. I've used it myself for a while and was very impressed.
