Please read https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian ... f_Syndrome

Pro Tip: the MX Linux (v17) repositories are compatible with Debian stable and contain *many* backported packages.

Not knowing anything about your system (other that Debian Unstable) it is difficult to give you a direct answer, I would guess you have an application menu somewhere and in it should be a file manager (maybe Thunar, Konqueror, Midnight Commander, PcManFm or others) which you can open and usually mount any found filesystems.

EDIT: And it might be prudent to read the link posted by HOAS, it might save you later.

Please start the following command before attaching the hdd and post the output:

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/syslog
What is the output of

Code: Select all

fdisk -l
when the hdd is attached?
Have a nice day!

and still you haven't done any work yourself, other than dump some output on us.
do you expect the online community to keep guiding you through your unstable adventures?
if you really, really, really need all that shiny new stuff, but can't be bothered to fix things yourself, you should try ubuntu.

To be fair OP only posted the information requested, how many time do we see posters not doing that and being chastised for it?

EDIT: and I don't think anything needs "fixing" in this case, it just doesn't work as user expected.

Try this (as root):

Code: Select all

mkdir /media/external

mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external

it didn't work:

Code: Select all

root@Mattia:/home/mattia# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Argomento non valido
The device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what can I do. I'm not a linux expert (that's why I have post on "Beginner question"), and I need some version of software not available in the stable version of debian.
But, after this "adventure", I'll reinstall debian stable. I need to backup my data first, then I need that the external hard drive works.

ok, I have format again the hard disk, and it works.
I don't know why, because before, with debian stable, it works.

Thanks for your support
