I installed bless with apt and got 151 certificates added

Postby manny6 » 2018-09-12 20:42

I am using Debian stretch

I wanted to install kdenlive and bless hex editor.

I typed
Code: Select all
apt install kdenlive bless

as root, to install both programs. I got 151 certificates added, don't know why. Never happen to me before. I got this in the terminal:

Code: Select all
apt install kdenlive bless

I don't know if this is normal for this program? I don't like trusting so many certificates. Don't know if its safe. I don't know what a trust store is? Does anyone know if it safe or should i remove them.

If I wanted to remove these certificates how would i do it?

Are all those codec the reason for so many certificates?

kdenlive certainly does not depend on any mono packages at all, so I would you suggest you fix the title of this thread--it's bless to blame all the way.

https://packages.debian.org/stretch/kdenlive
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Quod Libet 4.2.0, Pale Moon 28.1.0, wine-staging 3.19, GIMP 2.10.8, Liquorix kernel 4.18-21, CopyQ 3.7.0

It's okay. I apologize for the short answer, I think that has confused you. I did not mean for you to type in anything I wrote. I rarely if ever spoon feed commands like that. There are many ways to figure out why apt does what it does, so maybe look up dependencies and recommends in the wiki.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dpkg
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debi ... 02.en.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APT_(Debian)
https://wiki.debian.org/PackageManagement

The reason they are installed is probably because bless depends on a pkg that recommends they be installed.

Nobody will know on here if you really need them or not, because every sytems uses apt to install pkgs depending on what software you use.

I should have written
bless pkg Depends on pkg libmono-system4.0-cil
libmono-system4.0-cil pkg Recommends pkg ca-certificates-mono
ca-certificates-mono pkg Depends on pkg ca-certificates
ca-certificates pkg appears to contain at least some of the certs you mentioned in your post?

I looked at https://packages.debian.org/stretch/kdenlive and https://packages.debian.org/stretch/bless

I cannot tell from those pages, which one would add 151 certificates. Bless has less dependencies then kdenlive.

I installed bless years ago, when i was using ubuntu 14.04 and I don't remember see all those certificates. It's just a hex editor.

If your sure the title is wrong, i have no problem changing the title. I thought it was kdenlive

I already trust 0, your new list has 151

I've never seen

before, with the copyrights, thought it was a private corporation.

Re: I installed bless with apt and got 151 certificates adde

simple answer:
mono sucks.
it's some microsoft sh!t, or something that enables your computer to use microsoft sh!t.

technical answer:
read "man aptitude" and find out how you can list dependencies of a package.
if mono depends on a large package of certificates, well then that's what it is.

https://www.mono-project.com/

Sponsored by Microsoft, Mono is an open source implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Runtime.
---------------------

Combining M$ and open source, Anyway, I had to use mono a few years ago, and CLI-version worked well. All packages from Debian stable repo.

I removed it. Used synaptic to complete remove "mono-runtime" and "bless"

that said, mono isn't bad in itself.
i succesfully use it to run openBVE (one day i'm going ot have to write an article about it. i love it).
but for a hex editor you really don't need it.
lesson learned: always check what & how many dependencies an install wants to pull in.

Even seeing the mention of dot-net framework gives me the heebie-jeebies anymore. I once had a Windows machine with three different versions installed! And people wonder why I dislike using that operating system.

in all fairness, similar things can be said about gnu/linux also (gtk...).
it's safest to dislike windows for purely emotional and non-rational reasons, no need to respond to stupid counter-arguments like this one!
