why do I get 1.1.2 and not 1.1.6

#1 Post by fred44nl »

fred44nl@Debian:~$ sudo apt-cache policy minidlna
minidlna:
Geïnstalleerd: 1.1.6+dfsg-1
Kandidaat: 1:1.2.0-dmo1
Versietabel:
1:1.2.0-dmo1 500
500 http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch/main amd64 Packages
*** 1.1.6+dfsg-1 500
500 http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
both versions of minidlna get priority 500
1.1.6 is already installed, but it gets overwritten by version 1.1.2
this happened after I added http://www.deb-multimedia.org to my sources.list

why do I get an older version ??
and how do I prevent this ??

The answer is DebianMultimedia/FAQ#versioning:
To distinguish between our official packages and packages from d-m.o, d-m.o adds an 'epoch' to the version number and uses a specific revision counter. This means that once you installed a version from d-m.o, package management software will always consider that version newer than the official package - even when the official package is in actual fact a newer version (but without the epoch).
See also FAQ#Common_issues:
It is highly recommended to remove these unofficial packages from your system and replace them with the official ones provided by Debian instead.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

thanks for yr reaction
I understand what you are saying, but look at this:
fred44nl@Debian:~$ sudo apt-cache policy mpv
mpv:
Geïnstalleerd: 1:0.27.2-dmo1+deb9u1
Kandidaat: 1:0.27.2-dmo1+deb9u1
Versietabel:
*** 1:0.27.2-dmo1+deb9u1 500
500 http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
0.23.0-2+deb9u2 500
500 http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
500 http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates/main amd64 Packages
the original version of mpv was 0.23.0-2 and this version was causing problems
so the advice was to update it from deb-multimadia.org

would there have been another solution ??

I once took part in discussion with one Debian dev, and he said that 'they are pulling their hairs of because of debian-multimedia', because packages from there often break Debian packages, and sometimes they are blamed.

I have not needed debian-multimedia for years, stable has worked fine, also video and sound.

Deb.multimedia packages can cause you a lot of troubles when you upgrade to the next stable version of Debian, so be very careful of these unnoficial repos, I'm talking by experience.
Debian 12 Gnome on a MSI H61M-P25 (B3) PC & on a Dell Latitude E6410 & HP EliteBook 8540p Laptops.
LMDE 6 on a Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 Laptop.
Bodhi Linux 7 on a HP Compaq DC5750 Small Form Factor PC.
Windows 11 on a Intel DH55TC PC.

Is it not obvious? You got 1.1.2 after adding debian-multimedia.

In Debian stable:

Code: Select all

aptitude show minidlna
Paketti: minidlna
Versio: 1.1.6+dfsg-1

"The advice"? Where did the advice come from? Certainly not from this forum, the Debian wiki, or any other really knowledgeable Debian user.

For what it's worth...here's a port of mpv 0.29 to stretch: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... fmpeg4/mpv

It's versioned the Debian backports way, so it won't break an upgrade to Buster like the deb-multimedia versions can.

The two versions are not 1.1.2 and 1.1.6 they are 1.2.0-dmo1 and 1.1.6+dfsg-1 so the highest ver is correctly installed?

Code: Select all

500 http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch/main amd64 Packages
1:1.2.0-dmo1 500
500 http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch/main amd64 Packages
*** 1.1.6+dfsg-1 500

The packager at deb-multimedia added the epoch in the debian/changelog file before he built the package. The changelog should have been installed on your machine in the /usr/share/doc/minidlna folder.

thank you for this, but I'm getting more and more confused :)
I am trying to prepare myself to show HEVC video's over HDMI on my TV
my Debian 9 - LXDE machine has a HDMI cable connected to my TV.
so, I tried SMPlayer, but it did not support HEVC
next, I found mpv, from Debian, did not work
than I installed mpv from deb-multimedia and this worked, not only in mpv, but also in SMPlayer.
as advised not to use or at least be carefull with deb-multimedia, I removed mpv, edited my sources.list, followed the instructions to get the Debian packports package.
the result is, that the HEVC video is not showing. SMPlayer gives sound only and mpv does not work.
so, I edited my sources.list again and updated mpv from deb-multimedia.
and now it is working again.

sorry for all this, but I don't get it :)
