Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Hi,
I recovered an old internal hard disk from a desktop PC. The disk has been formatted and I would like to use it entirely for the installation of kali linux. During the installation I have the following problem in the disk partition stage:
"Partition 1 on / dev / sdb have been written, but we have been unable to inform you of the kernel of the change. making further changes ".
and then:
creation of the ext4 file system on partition 1 SCSI5 failed.
Can someone help me?
these are the images of the installation process:

This is
Debian User Forums , and not Kali users forum, for installing that try:
https://docs.kali.org/category/installation
and if you have problems , ask at :
https://forums.kali.org/
Before bothering them, maybe read:
https://docs.kali.org/introduction/shou ... kali-linux
Any way, you need to ask the people at Kali support, What kind of format is needed to install Kali ?

I find it hard to believe a professional penetration tester and security specialist, would not even know how to partition a HD .Is Kali Linux Right For You?
As the distribution’s developers, you might expect us to recommend that everyone should be using Kali Linux. The fact of the matter is, however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc
Any way, you need to ask the people at Kali support, What kind of format is needed to install Kali ?

And the others beat me,
Any way, since this is "Beginners"
I sometimes use FreeDos, to format "stubborn" HD's, and USB devices, In one case, I was unable to get the bios to read and boot with any install CD's, Linux, and OpenBSD, all said the same, they could not read the drive, but to my surprise the FreeDos install CD could read the drive, si I formatted, and installed FreeDos, after that the Linux installer could see the drive, and installed fine.
How ever :

P.S. And don't pay attention to what the Mr.Robot TV show says, it is a TV show, and is not of any use in the real world.

And most any Linux, in general,... I will give this tip.Beginners Questions
New to Debian (Or Linux in general)? Ask your questions here!

The HD might not even be any good, and still after all said and done, you need to ask the kali support about any specific requirements needed to install it. I have heard it is not really intended for HD installations, but is for "pen Drives" (USB sticks) .Postby alexguest » 2018-10-01 09:49

Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Come on, guys ! You can see from the pictures that this part of the installer is exactly the same as Debian, so knowledge of the Debian install can apply here.
OP : you forgot to report the important part of the message : "You should reboot now before making further changes."
This was good advice. I guess this is what you eventually did, and all is right now.
The error means that some parts of the previous disk contents are in use (e.g. contains LVM or RAID which was automatically activated by the installer), which prevents the kernel to take partition changes into account until the next boot or the volumes are deactivated. You could also have selected "manual partitioning" to see and delete the previous volumes, or start an installer shell and deactivate the previous volumes by hand.

Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
I can't read what it says in the images, so will take your word for it. If it says to re boot , then that is what they should do.
Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Just because the pictures look the same doesn't mean that the software is the same. In fact, the software is different...it's Kali! It is logical to ask for help installing Kali on the Kali forum, rather than the Debian forum.p.H wrote:Come on, guys ! My suggestion for the original poster's problem: do not install Kali, install Debian stable!
Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Come on, this is not possible, only Kali Linux makes you instantly l33t. With Debian you have to start as a n00b.RU55EL wrote:My suggestion for the original poster's problem: do not install Kali, install Debian stable!

True, but only l33t in your own mind!Segfault wrote:Come on, this is not possible, only Kali Linux makes you instantly l33t. With Debian you have to start as a n00b.RU55EL wrote:My suggestion for the original poster's problem: do not install Kali, install Debian stable!

AFAICS the partitioning part of the installer at least was just rebranded "Kali" but otherwise behaves identically to Debian's installer. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
@OP
Have you tried the actual Debian installer to see if it acts the same? I use Debian derivatives very often but would never post a question based on the other distro without confirming the error/behaviour/bug is exactly the same on "proper" Debian

Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
Does it look and behave exactly like Debian? Are you certain that it is exactly the same?p.H wrote:Who cares, as long as the installer looks and behaves exactly like Debian's ?
No one is suggesting that you shouldn't help the original poster. I am suggesting that the original poster should look for help at the Kali forum, or in Kali documentation, if they are having problems installing Kali.
By all means, feel free to help the original poster.

Re: Error with Partitioning during kali linux install
The Kali forums are pretty heavily moderated. Maybe they won't let this question even appear, since Kali is intended to be run off a USB stick instead of installed.
