Can Mate be installed on a Debian netinstall

Postby jacatone » 2019-08-01 23:48

I like the look of the Mate desktop but I really don't need all the bloatware like Libra Office. Would I be able install what I want with the minimal setup and still have the Mate desktop?

You would do well to read some of the installing documentation at the Debian.org website, so you understand better what you are doing. In a nut shell , when you use the netinstall, it installs a base system, that is the minimal install, but it does give you a opprtunity to use 'tasksel' and install additional software packages such as a DE , and Mate is included in the selection offered, but then it is no longer a minimal install.
I don't think installing Mate will pull in Libre Office, but I have not tried installing Mate my self, so really am not sure. Recently using netinstall for Debian 10, after the base system was installed, we installed Xfce, and no Libre Office was installed , it would need to be installed separately if one wanted it,
You can also remove any unwanted packages, if there are packages you do not want. To explain everything about installing Debian from a netinstall image, would take several pages, in a very long post, which would be pointless since there is so much good documentation on this at the Debian website, it really would be worth your time to read some of it. You could just install mate-desktop-environment-core which is a minimal Mate with no extra applications and add what you want.
Other options here - https://packages.debian.org/search?suit ... te-desktop
The package task-mate-desktop which is what the installer would use will give you everything but the kitchen sink. Or maybe that too.

This is what I always do.

I tell the installer I don't want a DE and then it will boot to the terminal when it is done and I always figure out the core install.

If you just install fro mthe installer or install the full desktop you will end up with Lobre Office and a bunch of packages you might not need.
